It was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Among its other hits were "Perfidia" and the theme from "Hawaii Five-O." The band got its start in 1958 in Tacoma. Bogle played lead and bass and Wilson played rhythm guitar. They were soon joined by Nokie Edwards, another guitarist, and drummer Howie Johnson, later replaced by Mel Taylor.

Blue Hawaii 1961 Elvis Presley's most successful film from a financial standpoint was the light comedy Blue Hawaii (1961). The plot revolves around Chad Gates (Elvis) returning to his family home in Hawaii after being discharged from the army. His father wants Chad to work for the family fruit company but Chad prefers to be independent. Shot on location, Blue Hawaii has some gorgeous scenery--including the lovely Joan Blackman who plays Elvis' romantic interest. Songs from the movie include the title track, Can't Help Falling In Love, and the Hawaiian Wedding Song. This film's box office appeal--and the success of its soundtrack--shifted Elvis away from dramatic roles. (His serious roles in both Flaming Star and Charro did not do nearly as well at the box office.) Blue Hawaii strangely features Angela Lansbury as Elvis' mother--even though Lansbury was actually just nine years older than Elvis.

New Zealand Judge Orders Name Change For Girl You can't make this stuff up... From July 2008: A judge in New Zealand, fed up with parents bestowing bizarre names on their offspring, has given a girl named Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii the chance to change hers. Judge Rob Murfitt has ruled that the girl, 9, become a ward of the court so her name can be changed. The girl was involved in a custody battle between her separated parents. In his ruling made public Thursday, Murfitt expressed concern at the 'very poor judgment' shown by the parents in selecting the moniker. 'It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily,' said Murfitt. The court heard that the girl was so embarrassed by her name that she never even told her friends. Instead, she told people to call her K, her lawyer told the family court in the port city of New Plymouth, located on the west coast of the North Island. The ruling was made in February 2008, but became public five months later when it was published in law reports. The girl's new name will not be made public in order to protect her identity. In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of strange names given to children in New Zealand. He said names blocked by registration officials included Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy, Twisty Poi, Fish and Chips, and Sex Fruit. However, Number 16 Bus Shelter and Violence were allowed. New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offence to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of births, deaths and marriages. Clarke said officials usually talk to parents who propose unusual names to convince them of the potential embarrassment for the child.

49-Star American Flag There have been 26 'official' versions of the American flag since 1776. The 48-star version lasted from 1912 until 1959 when Alaska entered the Union. President Dwight Eisenhower approved this short-lived 49-star version in which the stars appeared in seven staggered rows of seven. A year later Hawaii was added to the Union and the familiar 50-star version became official on July 4, 1960. The current run of more than 50 years without a change in the flag is the longest such stretch in American history.

Actor James MacArthur aka Dano from Hawaii Five-0 dies Actor James MacArthur, who played "Danno" in the original version of television's "Hawaii Five-0" and was the son of actress Helen Hayes and playwright Charles MacArthur, died Thursday at age 72. MacArthur's agent, Richard Lewis, said the actor died in Florida of "natural causes," but no direct cause was specified. In a career that spanned more than four decades, MacArthur was most recognized for his role as Detective Danny "Danno" Williams on "Hawaii Five-0," which aired from 1968 to 1980. Episodes often ended with detective Steve McGarret, the lead character, uttering what became a pop culture catch phrase: "Book 'em, Danno."
