The 1970s provided excellent hockey for NHL fans. One of the best rivalries was the Boston Bruins versus the Philadelphia Flyers. The two teams met in the playoffs four times in five seasons. In 1974, the upstart Flyers surprised the favored Bruins in six games to win the Stanley Cup. Two years later, in 1976, Philadelphia beat the Bruins in five games in a semifinal series. A year later Boston avenged the earlier defeats with a four-game sweep in the semis. (The victory was so decisive it got Boston's Brad Park and Gerry Cheevers on the cover of Sports Illustrated on May 9, 1977.) The following year, 1978, Boston again convincingly beat Philadelphia in five games in a semifinal. The 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs featured these two teams meeting in the postseason, a conference semifinal, for the first time since 1978. The Flyers won in seven games after losing the first three.

Gerry and The Pacemakers were one of the few groups in the 60's to initially challenge The Beatles in popularity. Like The Beatles, they came from Liverpool and were also managed by Brian Epstein. Despite their early success, the group never had another number one single in the UK. Gerry Marsden began writing most of their own songs, including "It's Gonna Be All Right", "I'm the One", and "Ferry Cross the Mersey", as well as their first and biggest U.S. hit, "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying".
All of these represented the band's light, poppy, enjoyable sound. By late 1965, their popularity was rapidly declining on both sides of the Atlantic. They lacked both the innovations of the Beatles and the rawer musical and visual edge of some of the other British Invasion groups, and they soon seemed un-hip. They disbanded in October 1966, with much of their latter recorded material never released in the UK. Drummer Freddie Marsden died on December 9, 2006, at age 66.

Personally, I like their original 1972 version better, but they still sound great today. Their first album, titled 'America' was released in Europe with only moderate success and without this song. But the producer, Ian Samwell was looking for a song that would be popular in both the US and Europe. He helped the group to record this song and then persuaded Warner Brothers to re-release the album with the song included. The original song title was 'Desert Song', but was renamed at Samwell's suggestion. It was written on a rainy day in England and was intended to capture the feel of the hot, dry desert Dewey Bunnell remembered from his childhood at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Bunnell's voice sounded so much like Neil Young's, that after Neil's father heard it, he called his son and asked him when he had recorded it! One thing that I think is funny is the line that included '...the heat was hot.' I mean, what else can heat be? Anyhow...I still love this song!

Another famous fight where you better not leave the room to get yourself a beer: From May 1981, rising heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney destroys a past-his-prime Ken Norton in just 54 seconds. This is one of the most brutal knockouts you'll ever see.

Brings back memories of slow dancing with pretty girls... Our children and grand children will never experience those simpler days. It is sad. We had great times and great music back then.

A mash up of Star Trek and Space 1999. I wish I could take credit for this one, but this was not done by me.
