Sad Decline of Benny Hill In 1990 The Benny Hill Show was airing in reruns in 97 countries around the world--but not in Great Britain where it had originated. The scourge of political correctness had forced Thames Television to end its association with Hill in 1989 after 20 successful years. Thames defended the move by saying Hill's periodic specials were becoming too costly, viewership was down, and the 65-year-old Hill was looking tired. However, by the late 1980s it was becoming unfashionable for Hill's sexually charged farcical comedy skits to be shown on British TV. (One anti-Hill crusader wildly blamed The Benny Hill Show for all the sexual assaults in the UK!) Hill did not need the money, but he did miss being on TV. He had open offers to appear in Las Vegas and name his price, but Hill did not want to make the journey overseas. Hill was a true loner who never married and was not known to have had a long-term relationship with anyone. The few friends he had said his dismissal by Thames was akin to handing Hill a death sentence. With assets worth more than 7.5 million British pounds, Hill was a bit of a miser. He never owned a car, he did his own shopping, and he lived in a very modest flat. He was also a slob. His flat was usually filled with dirty dishes, papers strewn everywhere, and dirty clothes on the floor. A friend once asked him why he threw his clothes on the floor. "Because they won't stick to the ceiling!" was his pithy answer. In February 1992, the 68-year-old Hill suffered mild heart attack. He was ordered to go on a diet. Two months later he died of another heart attack while sitting in a favorite chair in front of his television. His body was not discovered for three days. Hill's will had not been updated since 1961. The will's beneficiaries (his parents and his sister) had already died. The comedian's vast fortune was eventually split among nieces and nephews whom Hill had barely known. Among those who considered Benny Hill a comic genius were people as diverse as Charlie Chaplin, Michael Jackson and Walter Cronkite!

Failed Spinoff - The Tortellis In the early seasons of Cheers, some of the funniest episodes centered around the antics of Nick Tortelli, the sleazy ex-husband of Cheers barmaid Carla. Played by Dan Hedaya, Nick was a TV repairman who eventually married ex-showgirl Loretta (played by Jean Kasem and described by Total Television as "statuesque but dippy"). NBC figured the duo of Nick and Loretta had the potential to be comedy gold, so in January 1987 they were given their own sitcom titled The Tortellis. The show's premise was that Nick and his trophy wife had already split up and Loretta had returned to Las Vegas. They reconcile in the pilot episode and remain in Nevada in a crowded household. The couple lived with Nick's oldest son and his teenage wife--and Nick's pragmatic sister and her young son. The show never caught on, despite occasional special appearances by Cheers cast members. The Tortellis was dropped by NBC after the 13th episode aired on May 12, 1987 less than four months after its debut. Nick and Loretta made one more appearance on Cheers in which it was explained that Nick's TV repair business had failed.

Exhumation of President Taylor - 1991 President Zachary Taylor became the second American chief executive to die in office when he succumbed to gastro-intestinal problems on July 9, 1850 at age 65. Known for generally having robust health, Taylor had been ill for five days with severe stomach cramps and diarrhea. The cause may have been Taylor's overindulging in cherries covered in iced milk following a Fourth of July ceremony on the site where the Washington Monument was going to be erected. Doctors tried to cure the president with blood-letting and laxatives, but to no avail. The cause of Taylor's death was officially listed as "cholera morbus"--which apparently was an all-purpose answer whenever someone died suddenly from digestive problems in the middle of the 19th century. There was no autopsy. The dead president's body was preserved in ice for five days but never embalmed. More than 140 years later a historian named Clara Rising claimed Taylor had actually been poisoned by arsenic, perhaps by political enemies. (Taylor, despite being a slaveholder, was an outspoken pro-Union man. He had threatened to use the army to quash any secessionist movements.) Rising's compelling arguments--plus her willingness to pay $1200 in fees--persuaded officials in Kentucky to exhume Taylor's body from his crypt and perform modern scientific tests on it. The exhumation was carried out on June 18, 1991 with about 200 curious onlookers watching silently from a respectful distance. Modern forensic examination of Taylor's fingernails, sideburns, and even pubic hair showed no signs of arsenic poison whatsoever. Taylor was re-interred alongside his wife at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville, KY. Today the medical community believes that the purgatives that Taylor was given by his physician to cleanse his system may have contained mercury which may have hastened the president's demise.

Greg Maddux HOF plaque Fails Grammar Test Greg Maddux was one of baseball's greatest pitchers. He is undoubtedly worthy of being inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. However, when his plaque was unveiled at the 2014 induction ceremony, grammarians gasped at a flagrant error in he inscription. His plaque states Maddux had "less than 1,000 walks" in his illustrious career. Because walks is a plural noun, the plaque should have read "fewer than 1,000 walks..."
