We Missed Allan Melvin Passing aka Sam The Butcher Some how we missed Allan Melvin's passing back in January. A character actor best known for playing Sam the Butcher on "The Brady Bunch," has died. He was 84. Melvin died of cancer Thursday at his home in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles, said Amalia Melvin, his wife of 64 years. The jowly, jovial Melvin spent decades playing a series of sidekicks, second bananas and lovable lugs, including Archie Bunker's friend Barney Hefner on "All in the Family," and Sgt. Bilko's right-hand man Cpl. Henshaw on the "Phil Silvers Show." But his place in pop culture will be fixed as butcher and bowler Sam Franklin, the love interest of Brady family maid Alice Nelson, who was played by Ann B. Davis. Melvin played the role from 1970 to 1973. Born in Kansas City, Mo., in 1923, Melvin grew up in New York and attended Columbia University. He was appearing on Broadway in "Stalag 17" when he began his decades-long television career with "The Phil Silvers Show," playing a role his wife said was always his favorite. "He was proudest of that show," Amalia Melvin said. "I think the camaraderie of all those guys made it such a pleasant way to work. They were so relaxed." He saw steady employment as a voice actor from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, most famously providing the voice of "Magilla Gorilla" for the Hanna Barbera cartoon of the same name. His other credits include several guest appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show," "Gomer Pyle: USMC," and "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

Fixed Game Show Twenty One You'll want to watch this: This is the final few minutes of the infamous episode of Twenty One from 1956 when reigning champion Herbert Stempel 'took a dive' on orders from the show's producers so handsome challenger Charles Van Doren could win. Both players answer the question about the wives of Henry VIII correctly, but in an earlier game that had ended in a tie, Stempel had deliberately missed a relatively simple question on movies that would have given him the win.

Brooklyn Bridges 125th Birthday One Hundred and Twenty-five years after it's construction, the Brooklyn Bridge remains a powerful symbol of engineering might and imagination, and a revered fixture in the landscape of the nation's largest city. And it can still attract a crowd, like the one at the bridge's 125th birthday blowout Thursday night, May 22, 2008, which featured fireworks, a Navy flyover, a colorful new lighting scheme, a musical tribute to honor the storied span, and even a birthday cake in the shape of the bridge. ********* More Info in Comments:

Rock n Rollen Rollen Frederick Stewart, also known as Rock 'n' Rollen and Rainbow Man, was a fixture in American sports culture for about a decade. He became famous for wearing a rainbow-colored afro-style wig and, later, for holding up signs reading "John 3:16" at sporting events around the United States and overseas in the 1970s and 1980s. Stewart, a born-again Christian, was determined to "get the message out" via television. He figured televised sporting events provided the best opportunities. Stewart would strategically position himself for key shots of plays or athletes. Stewart's first major appearance was at the 1977 NBA Finals where he seemed to constantly be on camera. By the time of the 1979 MLB All-Star Game, broadcasters were actively trying to avoid showing him. Undaunted, Stewart appeared behind NFL goalposts, near Olympic medal stands, and even at the Augusta National Golf Club. At the 1982 Indianapolis 500, he was behind the pits of race winner Gordon Johncock. Stewart's fame led to a Budweiser beer commercial and a Saturday Night Live parody sketch. Stewart was briefly jailed by Moscow police at the 1980 Summer Olympics for wearing a red, white, and blue afro wig. By the mid-1980s Stewart's began exhibiting irrational behavior. In the late 1980s, he began a string of stink bomb attacks. His targets included the Orange County Register, the Trinity Broadcasting Network, and a Christian bookstore. The stated intent of an attempted attack at the American Music Awards was to show the public that "God thinks this stinks." Stewart is currently serving three consecutive life sentences for a orchestrating a hostage-taking and attempted kidnapping at a California hotel in 1992. Reportedly, Stewart believed that the Rapture was due to arrive in six days. During the standoff, he threatened to shoot at airplanes taking off from nearby Los Angeles International Airport and covered his hotel room windows with "John 3:16" placards. His next parole hearing is in 2017.

Gabriel Melgar - Replacement Chico Chico and the Man was a hit sitcom for NBC in the mid-1970s. Starring Freddie Prinze and Jack Albertson, the show debuted in 1974 and centered on the relationship between crusty, aging widower Ed Brown (a "seventh-generation WASP" whose garage was the last white-owned business in his Los Angeles neighborhood) and his Mexican-American employee Francisco (Chico) Rodriguez. Chico and The Man was a regular fixture in the top 10 until Prinze's shocking suicide at age 22 in January 1977. Enough shows with Prinze had been made in advance to last several weeks. The remaining episodes of the 1976-77 season focused on minor cast members. Common sense dictated that NBC should cancel the show, but instead a revamped Chico and the Man debuted in the fall of 1977. Twelve-year-old Gabriel Melgar was cast as illegal-immigrant orphan Raul Garcia who had stowed away in Ed Brown's car when he was returning from a fishing trip to Mexico. Brown referred to Raul as "Chico," explaining to the boy, "You're all Chicos to me!" Prinze's character was said to be visiting relatives in Mexico. However, in one episode Raul finds Chico's belongings in a closet and starts to play his guitar. Ed has an emotional meltdown, smashes the guitar, and eventually explains to Raul that Chico had died. Ratings for the revised version of Chico and the Man were terrible, so the show was axed at the end of the 1977-78 season. Melgar didn't do much in showbiz after the cancellation of Chico and the Man. He appeared in one episode of CHiPs, one episode of Love Boat, and he had a role in a forgettable 1979 action flick titled Jaguar Lives--and that was it. According to one fansite, Melgar is now employed in the biomedical field.

1978 World Cup Soccer Fix The 1978 World Cup tournament was held in Argentina during the era when a brutal military junta ruled the South American country. Fearing for their safety, two of the world's best players (Holland's Johann Cruyff and West Germany's Franz Beckenbauer) both boycotted the tourney. The most controversial match pitted the host Argentines versus Peru. The Peruvians were already mathematically eliminated. Argentina had to win by at least four goals to overtake Brazil in the pool standings and qualify to meet the Dutch in the final. Peru put forth an effort so dismal in a 6-0 defeat that the Peruvian players bought newspaper ads in Lima to insist the match hadn't been fixed. Years later, after the junta was toppled, documents indicated that about $50 million was paid by the Argentine government to top Peruvian soccer officials to get the desired result. Argentina defeated Holland in the final.
