Emilys Reasons Why Not - One Episode Sitcom Emily's Reasons Why Not was a very short-lived ABC sitcom starring Heather Graham. The show was based on the novel of the same name. Although seven episodes were made, Emily's Reasons Why Not was cancelled after one episode on Monday, January 9, 2006. The series centered on Emily (Graham), an author of self-help books who is unable to find success in romance. In the premiere episode she ends a bad relationship and adopts a new rule for her romances: if she can list five reasons to break up with a guy...she does. Emily gets help from her friends, among them Josh, whose character is strongly based on overtly gay stereotypes. The show was widely considered a less risqué copycat of Sex and the City. In the first episode, Emily is convinced the man she is dating is gay when he is actually a devout Mormon practising chastity before marriage. The show drew fire from pro-abstinence groups for its inability to portray an abstinent person without relying on stereotypes of homosexuality. Despite heavy promotion by both Sony Pictures Television and ABC, the show was pulled after the first episode due to drawing only 6.2 million viewers. Production was stopped after filming six episodes. ABC was said to have spent millions on promotion, including airtime, billboards and radio ads, and considered Emily to be the 'linchpin' of the network's post-football Monday-night schedule. After viewing it, ABC's entertainment president suggested that they considered the show lackluster and unlikely to improve. The New York Times attributed the show's cancellation in part to the extremely unappealing nature of the main character and her portrayal by Graham.

Final Ed Sullivan Show - 1971 The Ed Sullivan Show (called The Toast of the Town until 1955) debuted on CBS on June 20, 1948. The first season it aired live on Sundays from 9 to 10 p.m. For the next 22 years it aired on Sundays from 8 to 9 p.m. and became a television staple and a cultural institution. Fondly remembered, The Ed Sullivan Show is arguably the most important entertainment program in television history as it showcased the world's best singers, dancers, actors, musicians, magicians, circus acts, and comedians. (Many classic Broadway performances exist today solely because they were preserved on The Ed Sullivan Show.) Despite Ed's obvious shortcomings as a television host--he was extremely "wooden" as an emcee--the appeal of the show was that it provided something for everybody. One critic aptly declared, "Ed Sullivan can't sing, dance or tell jokes--but he knows who can!" By 1971 The Ed Sullivan Show was in decline, however. Ratings were still generally good, but the all-important demographics showed that younger viewers were no longer watching in sizable numbers. Accordingly CBS unceremoniously applied the ax. The last live show aired on Sunday, March 28, 1971. The performers on that final Sunday were folk singer Melanie; singing duo Tony Sandler & Ralph Young; Danny Davis & the Nashville Brass; mezzo-soprano Joanna Simon; impressionist David Frye; comedian Joey Adams; comedy duo Norman Wisdom and Tony Fane; comedian Lennie Schultz; and sleight-of-hand artist Vic Perry. Sullivan, who hoped to extend his show to at least 25 seasons, had no inkling the March 28, 1971 broadcast would be the last show, so there was no grand finale or tearful farewell. Reruns continued through June 6, 1971. The Ed Sullivan Show was replaced by the CBS Sunday Evening Movie--which lasted just one season. From all accounts, the cancellation of the show deeply affected Sullivan's health and well being. He began exhibiting signs of senility. Paul McCartney recalled encountering Sullivan about a year after the show's cancellation and Sullivan had no idea who McCartney was. Joan Rivers had a similar experience. Sullivan died on October 13, 1974--which was a Sunday--just a few months after being diagnosed with advanced esophageal cancer. He was 73 years old.

Harry Spear - The Lost Rascal Harry Spear was one of the leading men in the Our Gang/Little Rascals comedies in the late silent period of 1927 to 1929. Before joining the popular Our Gang series, Spear appeared in several Buck Jones westerns. Spear's first appearance in an Our Gang comedy was in Chicken Feed when he was five. He became a popular member of the gang, notable for often donning an oversized bowler hat. At the dawn of the sound era, newcomer Jackie Cooper took over the role as the leader/tough guy in the gang, replacing Spear. Spear's final Our Gang film was Bouncing Babies. After departing the series, Spear briefly entered vaudeville, entertaining audiences with a dancing and monologue routine. By the mid-1940s, though, he had left the entertainment industry and had severed all ties with his former Our Gang alumni. Spear's whereabouts after the 1940s remained a mystery for over half a century. However, several diligent Our Gang fans tracked Spear down in 1995. Residing in San Diego, California at the time, Spear (who went by his legal name of Harry Bonner) continually denied being the 'Harry Spear' of Our Gang fame for unknown reasons, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. From military service records, it was found that Harry Spear served as a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Spear died of kidney cancer on September 22, 2006 in San Diego at age 85.
