Co-Ed Fever - Forgotten Sitcom There have been a handful of sitcoms that lasted just one episode. This is one of them: the college-based Co-Ed Fever. This CBS show aired just once, on Sunday, February 4, 1979. It followed CBS' screening of the movie Rocky which drew very good ratings. When the overnight ratings for Co-Ed Fever were disappointing, CBS panicked and cancelled its commitment for at least five other episodes which were to have a Monday evening time slot. The show was set in Brewster House at Baxter College, an eastern women's school that had just recently allowed male students to enroll. Total Television calls Co-Ed Fever a "hapless sitcom." Cast member Heather Thomas, who would later have a substantial roll on The Fall Guy, once joked that Co-Ed Fever "was cancelled after the third commercial." Jane Rose, who played Mrs. Selby (the matron at Brewster House), died a few months after Co-Ed Fever was axed. Alexa Kenin (who played Mousie and later had film roles in Little Darlings and Pretty in Pink), died at age 23 in 1985. Her cause of death has never been made public. Here is the show's opening montage.

Yalta Conference 1945 The fate of postwar Europe was decided in 1945 at the Soviet Union resort city of Yalta on the Crimean Sea. With Nazi Germany on the verge of defeat, the leaders of the three major Allied combatant nations met to decide the fate of Germany and eastern Europe. Franklin Roosevelt is visibly ill and weary from the long journey. The British Empire is in decline and Winston Churchill can no longer assert any strength. By default Josef Stalin is given free rein to deal with matters in eastern Europe. The Cold War was about to begin.

Charlie Chaplin Grave Robbery On Christmas Day 1977, Charlie Chaplin died at the age of 88 at his estate in Vevey, Switzerland. He was buried in a local cemetery. Sixty-eight days later, on March 3, 1978, Chaplin's coffin was disinterred by grave robbers. Shortly thereafter Chaplin's family began receiving calls from a man demanding $600,000 for the return of Chaplin's remains. Mrs. Chaplin had no intention of paying any ransom, but she kept in contact with the criminals so the police could hunt them down. Eventually they were nabbed 11 weeks after the crime. The culprits had reburied Chaplin's coffin in a corn field. Chaplin's coffin was reinterred in its original burial place--under six feet of concrete to deter further grave-robbing attempts. The criminals, recent refugees from eastern Europe, were convicted of 'disturbing the peace of the dead.'

Australian PM Vanishes - 1967 Harold Holt, the 58-year-old prime minister of Australia, who had been in office only 22 months, vanished while swimmiming in the ocean late in 1967. On the morning of Sunday, December 17, Holt together with friends Christopher Anderson, Jan Lee and George Illson and his two bodyguards, drove down from Melbourne to see the British yachtsman Alec Rose sail through Port Phillip Heads in his boat Lively Lady to complete a leg of his solo circumnavigation of the globe, which started and ended in England. Around noon, the party drove to one of Holt's favorite swimming and snorkelling spots, Cheviot Beach on Point Nepean near Portsea, on the eastern arm of Port Phillip Bay. Holt decided to go swimming, although the surf was heavy and Cheviot Beach was notorious for its strong currents and dangerous rip tides. Ignoring his friends' pleas not to go in, Holt began swimming, but soon disappeared from view. Fearing the worst, his friends raised the alarm. Within a short time, the beach and the water off shore were being searched by a large contingent of police, Royal Australian Navy divers, Royal Australian Air Force helicopters, Army personnel from nearby Point Nepean and local volunteers. This quickly escalated into one of the largest search operations in Australian history, but no trace of Holt was ever found. Two days later, the government made an official announcement that Holt was presumed dead. Deputy Prime Minister John McEwen was sworn in as caretaker Prime Minister until such time as the governing Liberal party could elect a new leader. There were many rumors surrounding Holt's strange death, including claims that he had committed suicide or faked his own death in order to run away with his mistress. The mystery became the subject of numerous urban myths in Australia, including persistent claims that he was kidnapped (or rescued) by a Chinese submarine, or the far-fetched claim that he had been abducted by a UFO.

Heidi Game 1968 The 'Heidi Game' is a derisive nickname given to the New York Jets-Oakland Raiders AFL game played on Sunday, November 17, 1968. It was a much-anticipated marquee clash between two 7-2 teams that was regionally televised by NBC. Well, it was partially televised by NBC--and that was the problem. The game, scheduled for a 4 p.m. eastern start, ran beyond the three-hour time frame allotted to it by the network. At 7 p.m., with the Jets leading 32-29 with 65 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, NBC abruptly cut away from the football broadcast without warning to its scheduled programming: a made-for-TV version of the children's classic 'Heidi.' (NBC had been heavily promoting the movie as part of sweeps week.) Outraged football fans swamped NBC and its affiliates with angry phone calls. They became even angrier after viewers learned that Oakland had scored two touchdowns in the final minute to win 43-32. The uproar reached the front page of the next day's New York Times and national newscasts. The result was that after 1968, pro football broadcasting agreements required the networks to show games in their entirety.
