In 1934, 20th Century Fox signed six-year-old Shirley Temple to a movie contract after seeing her in a few "Baby Burlesque" comedies made by a low-budget film company. Temple's first film for 20CF was Stand Up and Cheer. The plot is far-fetched and hokey: The federal government appoints Warner Baxter as Secretary of Amusement with the goal of making Americans smile their way through the Great Depression! This lackluster film, comprised mostly of second-rate vaudeville acts, is almost unwatchable until little Shirley and Jimmy Dunn make their appearances and rescue what would otherwise be a stinker of a movie. Here are the eight minutes of Shirley's scenes from this historically important film. (In Shirley's autobiography she admits to having a huge crush on Dunn. You can tell the feeling is mutual. Really, who couldn't love little Shirley?)

The 1987 TV commercial for Life Call alarm systems is so well known that it has inspired numerous parodies. (There are about a dozen on YouTube.) Here is one of the more amusing ones recently made.

From 1974, Jim Stafford gives a live performance of his quirky song My Girl Bill on British TV. This song actually got to number 12 on the US charts and number seven in Canada. From my experience listening to oldies stations, it's rarely heard nowadays. When My Girl Bill was first released, some radio stations banned it for promoting homosexuality. It doesn't, of course, as the last stanza explains.

Here are highlights from a highly anticipated third-round 1977 ladies' match at Wimbledon: tiny 14-year-old Tracy Austin--with braces on her teeth and her hair in pigtails--versus defending champion Chris Evert. These highlights are a little misleading as Evert won handily 6-1, 6-1. (Check out Tracy's "Shirley Temple" tennis outfit!)

Bonnie Franklin, 'One Day at a Time' star, dies
March 1, 2013, 4:14 PM EST
NEW YORK (AP) -- Bonnie Franklin, the pert, redheaded actress whom millions came to identify with for her role as divorced mom Ann Romano on the long-running sitcom "One Day at a Time," has died.
She died Friday at her home in Los Angeles due to complications from pancreatic cancer, family members said. She was 69. Her family had announced she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September.
Franklin was a veteran stage and television performer before "One Day At a Time" made her a star.

Fans of the classic sitcom Leave it to Beaver will be saddened to hear of the passing of Frank Bank, one day after his 71st birthday, on April 13, 2013. Bank played the not-too-bright Clarence "Lumpy" Rutherford. In the show's first season Lumpy was an oversized bully who terrorized both Wally and Beaver. Later Lumpy became the inseparable friend of Wally and Eddie Haskell. After Leave it to Beaver went off the air in 1963, Bank went on to become a successful stockbroker. At one point he was a business partner of Jerry Mathers who played Beaver Cleaver.

Here is an eight-minute excerpt from the silent era of the Our Gang comedies. This clip is from the 1923 film The Champeen. It was just the seventh Our Gang film ever made. Here's the plot: A policeman catches Sammy Morrison stealing $1 worth of apples. The cop threatens to send Sammy to jail unless he can come up with $1. Sammy comes up with the idea of exploiting the rivalry between Mickey Daniels and Jackie Davis (who are both smitten with pretty Mary Kornman) by staging a boxing match between the two amorous boys and charging admission. Though the film is dated, it has its funny moments! Boxing matches were featured in at least two other Our Gang comedies in the series' later years.

Before John Madden became a familiar voice on NFL broadcasts, he was the fiery, hyperenergetic coach of the Oakland Raiders. Madden parodies himself in this Miller Lite Beer commercial from 1980.
