Mickey Carroll, one of the last surviving diminutive "Munchkins" in the 1939 movie "The Wizard of Oz," died of natural causes on Thursday in Missouri at age 89, a newspaper reported.
Carroll, who stopped growing at a young age, was an entertainer early in life and befriended actress Judy Garland, leading to a role alongside her in classic "The Wizard of Oz,"

Bob Bogle, lead guitarist and co-founder of the rock band The Ventures, known for 1960s instrumental hits like "Walk, Don't Run," and "Telsta", has died at age 75.
Don Wilson, the band's other co-founder, stated that Bogle became ill over the weekend and died Sunday.
The band sold millions of albums and heavily influenced other rock guitarists. It was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
Among its other hits were "Perfidia" and the theme from "Hawaii Five-O."
The band got its start in 1958 in Tacoma. Bogle played lead and bass and Wilson played rhythm guitar. They were soon joined by Nokie Edwards, another guitarist, and drummer Howie Johnson, later replaced by Mel Taylor.

Albert Woolson, the last accepted Civil War veteran of the Union Army, died on August 2, 1956. At the time of his death he was reputedly 109 years old. However, census data indicated that Woolson was likely 'only' 106 years old. Woolson's father had been killed at the Battle of Shiloh. Woolson enlisted as a drummer boy in 1864. His unit did only garrison duty, so Woolson never experienced combat. After Woolson died, Life Magazine did a seven-page feature on him.

One of the overlooked comedy greats from the silent-screen era was Charley Chase. Chase began working in films at age 19 in 1912 and was still amusing audiences well into the sound era. Chase performed in comedies under Mack Sennett at Keystone but he is more famous for his long association with Hal Roach Studios. Chase often played a luckless character who was frequently the victim of unfortunate circumstances. Wrote one film historian, "Charley Chase was always innocent--but he got caught anyway." Often the setup to Chase's film gags was long and complex. Consider this clip from the 1924 film Accidental Accidents. Sadly, Chase died of a heart attack in 1940 at the age of 46.
