I have an old friend that I have not seen in a lot of years. He named his first daughter Patches because he loved this song so much. She would be about 40 years old today.

Dickie Goodman made several popular novelty songs in the 70s. He used samples from top hits and media soundbites to form a sort of time capsule of topical humor. We kids loved them!

Wally Albright began acting at age four. He made one appearance in an Our Gang comedy in 1932. In 1934 Hal Roach brought him in as an Our Gang regular to replace Dickie Moore. Albright's naturally blond hair and leadership qualities made him a natural as a key member of the troupe. His most famous Our Gang short was 'Washee Ironee' in which well-to-do Wally chose playing football with the gang over practising his violin. Much to Roach's surprise, Wally stayed with with Our Gang for only five short films before moving on to small roles in feature films. After his acting days ended, Albright became extremely successful in the California produce business. He was also a national skiing champion. He died a month before his 74th birthday in 1999. See? Not every Our Gang member died young, tragically or penniless.

Dickie Moore was an Our Gang regular in 1932 and 1933, becoming one of the troupe's lead male characters. Dickie was a clean-cut, likable boy who often played the 'straight man' parts against more comical characters. In addition to his Our Gang work, Moore is often remembered for his portrayal of the title character in the 1933 adaptation of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist and as Marlene Dietrich's son in Blonde Venus (1932).
He is also famous for giving Shirley Temple her first onscreen kiss, in Miss Annie Rooney (1942). With dozens of news cameras present to record the 'end-of-innocence kiss,' Moore has described the incident as the most terrifying of his life. (It was the first time in his 17 years that he had kissed any girl!) Moore was less successful as a teenage and young-adult actor, and retired from the screen in the early 1950s. Moore went on to teach and write books about acting, edit Equity magazine, perform on Broadway, in stock, and on television. He also wrote and directed for TV, produced an Oscar-nominated short film (The Boy and the Eagle), and produced industrial films. Moore, who married actress Jane Powell in 1988, passed away on September 10, 2015--just two days before his ninetieth birthday.

Here's a fun segment from the March 21, 1954 episode of What's My Line. Longtime WML panelist Dorothy Kilgallen had given birth to her third child, Kerry, just two days before, so she was absent from the show. Infant Kerry's two older siblings, Dickie (12) and Jill (10), appear as co-mystery guests and have the esteemed panel flummoxed for a while.

The 1942 comedy Miss Annie Rooney was a bit of a dud. Fourteen-year-old Shirley Temple plays the title character--a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who becomes the romantic interest of wealthy Marty White (played by Our Gang alumnus Dickie Moore). The flick is remembered by movie and trivia buffs for one awkward scene in which Shirley is romantically kissed for the first time in her storied movie career. Dozens of news photographers were present to record the "end of innocence" moment for posterity. As you will see, it wasn't much of a kiss. Decades later Moore--who was utterly terrified to be the first actor to woo Shirley--described the kiss as "tepid" and "pathetic". It was the first time Moore, who was 16, had ever kissed a girl either on-screen or off-screen.
