I enjoy collecting sports memorabilia. I have a large collection of The Ring Magazine, the self-proclaimed Bible of Boxing. I especially love the magazine covers from the 1940s and early 1950s. They were terrific works of art--especially those created by C. R. Scharre! Check out this cover from the December 1952 issue featuring new heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano and former champ Jack Dempsey. Founded in 1922, The Ring Magazine is apparently the fourth most collected magazine in America (behind National Geographic, Playboy, and Life).

This is the last half of the first round of Jack Dempsey's title-winning effort against huge world heavyweight champion Jess Willard. The date was July 4, 1919. The site was Toledo, Ohio. Watch as Dempsey lands a perfect left hook that sends Willard crumbling to the canvas. The brave champ rises and gets knocked down six more times before he's saved by the bell. (There was no neutral-corner rule or mandatory eight count in 1919.) Incredibly, Willard survived two more punishing rounds--without being knocked down again--before quitting in his corner at the end of the third round. Men were men back in those days!

A hugely popular 80's TV show in the UK. New York cop Lt. James Dempsey has to flee the US. after discovering high level corruption in his force, so under the banner of an exchange programme ends up in the UK. Paired off with the upper class Det. Sgt. Harriet Makepeace the two mismatched cops together solve some weird and wonderful crimes. It did try a little too hard at times to look like some US. imports of the time but was great fun none the less.

Former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey assures his legions of fans that he can whip any boxing robot that science can create! The Manassa Mauler says, 'I wouldn't be afraid of any robot or mechanical man. I could tear it to pieces, bolt by bolt, and scatter its brain wheels and cogs all over the canvas.' (You can't make this stuff up, folks!)

It is one of boxing's most talked about incidents. In 1926, boxing master Gene Tunney outpointed slugger Jack Dempsey in Philadelphia to win the world heavyweight crown. Their rematch a year later in Chicago produced the famous 'long count.' Watch as Dempsey floors Tunney but forgets to go to a neutral corner as required by the new rule. Tunney takes a nine count but stays on the canvas for 14 seconds because of Dempsey's gaffe.

Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints kicks a record-setting, 63-yard, game-winning field goal in 1970. Dempsey was born with only half his right foot and a stub for his right arm. The record has since been matched by Jason Elam.

Here's newspaper or magazine ad, probably from the 1950s, promoting Jack Dempsey's restaurant in New York City. It was a Broadway staple for many years. The ex-champ loved to mingle with his fans.

Quite simply this was the wildest world heavyweight tile fight of all time: Jack Dempsey defends his title versus Argentina's Luis Firpo at New York City's Polo Grounds on September 14, 1923. This edited version of the events doesn't tell the whole story. There were actually nine knockdowns in the first round and two more in the second! In an Associated Press poll in 1950, sports writers declared this bout to be the most exciting sports contest in the first half of the twentieth century.

A Broadway eatery owned by former heavyweight champion was a New York City hot spot for many decades. Visitors could often find the ex-champ on the premises greeting his fans and customers. (My grandparents met Mr. Dempsey that way!) Menus from the restaurant made excellent souvenirs.
