Press Sisters Gender Controversy Tamara and Irina Press, two sisters from the old Soviet Union, were dominant in women's athletics during the early 1960s. Tamara (pictured here) was virtually unbeatable in shot put. Irina was an excellent pentathlete and a world-record holder in the 80-metre hurdles. The trouble was they didn't look too feminine. Speculation about the sisters' true gender was always present. Some western sports journalists began secretly referring to the Press sisters as the 'Press brothers.' When the governing body of European athletics began instituting gender testing in 1966, instead of complying, the Press sisters vanished from international competition--never to return. Soviet newspapers reported that they had retired from sports to tend to their ailing mother. When Irina died in 2004, several months went by before her death was officially announced.

Oh Happy Day John Wayne married Josephine Saenz, daughter of the Panamanian Consul in Los Angeles on June 23, 1933. After the ceremony, the couple and guests celebrated at the home of Loretta Young (right). Wayne divorced Josephine in 1945 after he met the woman who would become his second wife, Esperanza Baur. Their rocky marriage lasted until 1953 when Wayne met Pilar Pallete, the daughter of a Peruvian Senator. Pallete was married to Wayne until his death in 1979 from lung cancer. . .

Brady Bunch TV Guide Cover The Brady Bunch grace this cover of TV Guide. I'm assuming it's from 1970. The pictures are definitely from the first season (1969-70). One giveaway of the date is that Tiger the dog only appeared in a few episodes that first season--before he met his untimely death under the wheels of a florist's truck.

Sam Sheppard Murder Case 1954 This 1997 investigative report deals with the famous murder case in which a 30-year-old Cleveland, Ohio doctor, Sam Sheppard, was convicted of murdering his 31-year-old wife, Marilyn, on the Fourth of July weekend in 1954. Marilyn was bludgeoned to death in her bed while her husband was supposedly napping in front of the TV one floor below. Sheppard claimed he was roused by shouts coming from the upstairs bedroom and was twice knocked out by a bushy-haired intruder. Sheppard was quickly accused by the media. He was found guilty by a jury, served a decade in prison, and then had his conviction overturned in a new trial in 1966. He died a broken man in 1970. Was Sam Sheppard guilty? Suffice to say his original conviction has been hotly debated by crime buffs ever since.

McLean Stevenson Quits MASH In what may have been the worst career move in television history, McLean Stevenson left the cast of MASH in 1975 and signed a long term-contract with NBC. MASH lasted until 1983 and is listed among the all-time great series. Stevenson was given roles in five different NBC series, none of which lasted more than a season and a half. Stevenson rued his decision until his death in 1996.

The Conqueror- Nuked Many Actors Filmed near the site of contemporaneous nuclear testing grounds, the set was contaminated by nuclear fallout. After location shooting, much dirt from the location was transported back to Hollywood in order to match interior shooting done there. Scores of cast and crew members developed forms of cancer over the next two decades, many more than the normal percentage of a random group of this size. Quite a few died from cancer or cancer-related problems, including John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Pedro Armendáriz (who shot himself to death soon after learning he had terminal cancer), Agnes Moorehead, 'Thomas Gomez' , John Hoyt and director Dick Powell. People magazine researched the subsequent health of the cast and crew, which it published in November 1980. By the time of the article's publication, 91 of the 220 members of the film's cast and crew had contracted cancer, and half of these had died from the disease. The figures did not include several hundred local American Indians who served as extras on the set. Nor did it include relatives who had visited cast and crew members on the set, such as the Duke's son Michael Wayne. The People article quoted the reaction of a scientist from the Pentagon's Defense Nuclear Agency to the news: "Please, God, don't let us have killed John Wayne".

Paul Newman Passes at 83 Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as the anti-hero of such films as "Hud,""Cool Hand Luke" and "The Color of Money" - and as an activist, race car driver and popcorn impresario - has died. He was 83. Newman died Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends. In May, Newman had dropped plans to direct a fall production of "Of Mice and Men," citing unspecified health issues. He got his start in theater and on television during the 1950s, and went on to become one of the world's most enduring and popular film stars, a legend held in awe by his peers. He was nominated for Oscars 10 times, winning one regular award and two honorary ones, and had major roles in more than 50 motion pictures, including "Exodus,""Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,""The Verdict,""The Sting" and "Absence of Malice." ******MORE IN COMMENTS******

Siege of Leningrad Durng the Second World War, German forces surrounded the historic city of Leningrad (St. Petersburg) from August 1941 through January 1944. The siege resulted in the deaths of more than one million Russians, mostly due to starvation and disease. He is some archival film chronicling the misery of everyday life during history's worst siege.

I Buried Paul On this day in 1969, The Beatles scored their 13th US No.1 album with 'Abbey Road'. The cover supposedly contained clues adding to the ‘Paul Is Dead’ phenomenon: Paul is barefoot and the car number plate ‘LMW 281F’ supposedly referred to the fact that McCartney would be 28 years old if he was still alive. ‘LMW’ was said to stand for ‘Linda McCartney Weeps. ’ And the four Beatles, represent; the priest (John, dressed in white), the Undertaker (Ringo in a black suit), the Corpse (Paul, in a suit but barefoot), and the Gravedigger (George, in jeans and a denim work shirt). for those of you too young to remember, rumors of Paul McCartney's death began to circulate in 1969, a time when the strained relationships among the Beatles were becoming public knowledge. Written versions of this story first appeared in college newspapers in the fall of 1969, but the precise origin of the rumor is unknown. The story caught fire with the public when it was broadcast by a radio station in Detroit. Russell Gibb, a disc jockey for WKNR-FM, received a strange phone call from someone who identified himself only as Tom. The caller told Gibb that Paul McCartney had died in 1966 and was then replaced by a lookalike. The Beatles had subsequently left clues on their albums about this deception. . Other Beatles album covers also contained clues, the caller claimed, and a few Beatles songs contained clues about Paul's death—including some that could only be deciphered when the records were played backwards! Gibb related the rumor of Paul's death on the air, which brought a strong reaction from listeners and the story spread rapidly after that.
