Final Whats My Line - John Daly Mystery Guest The original classic Sunday night version of What's My Line ended its run of more than 17 years and 876 shows on September 3, 1967. Everyone figured the final mystery guest would be a biggie. Some newspapers even speculated it would be President Lyndon Johnson. (Hence, Arlene Francis' question about being 'voted into office.') Instead host John Daly was himself the mystery guest! Quite a fitting conclusion, I'd say!

Arlene Francis on WML After Tragic Accident This is the introduction of the What's My Line panelists for June 26, 1960. It was the night after a freak accident, originating from Arlene Francis' Manhattan home, in which an unfortunate passerby was killed. Arlene lived in an eighth-floor apartment at the Ritz Tower at the corner of Park Avenue and 57th Street. Eight-pound weightlifting dumbbells were used to prop open a screen window of the apartment where an air conditioning unit had been removed. On the night before this show aired, while Arlene was in Connecticut peforming in a play, a maid accidentally knocked a dumbbell out the window. It struck a luckless pedestrian on the street below and killed him! The victim, Alvin M. Rodecker, a financier from Detroit, was visiting New York City with his wife to celebrate his 60th birthday. (Rodecker's wife noted the last thing her husband said was what a wonderful time he was having.) In 1962 Francis paid Rodecker's estate $175,000 in an out-of-court settlement. The Ritz Tower paid $10,000. John Daly congratulates Arlene on appearing so soon on WML after the awful incident.

Lauren Bacall on Whats My Line Glamorous Lauren Bacall appeared as a mystery challenger on What's My Line on November 8, 1953. (I believe host John Daly enjoyed the conferences!)

Bob Hope on Whats My Line 1958 Bob Hope was the mystery challenger on this episode of What's My Line from April 13, 1958. Most noteworthy is the fact that it is one of the rare WML episodes not hosted by John Daly. (There were only four such occasions in 17.5 years!) Clifton Fadiman does the honors instead.

Harpo Marx on The Today Show From 1961, Harpo Marx is interviewed (sort of) by John Daly on The Today Show. Harpo's autobiography, Harpo Speaks, had just been released.

Julie London on Whats My line Nearly 900 episodes of the classic Sunday night CBS version of What's My Line were made between 1950 and 1967. Host John Daly only missed four of them. Here's one of the four: Actress Julie London is the mystery challenger as regular panelist Bennett Cerf pinch hits for the vacationing John Daly on September 29, 1957.

Another Interactive Version of Whats My Line Steve asked me to try this, so here goes. Let's pretend I'm John Daly, the distinguished host of What's My Line. All of you are the panelists. You are blindfolded as the mystery guest (who exists in my mind) enters the studio. The crowd cheers as he/she signs in and takes a seat next to Mr. Daly. Your task is to identify the mystery challenger from scratch. In the tradition of WML, you will ask questions that can only be answered yes or no. Of course the mystery guest is a famous person. The one quirk is that he/she may be deceased. Good luck! May we have the first question, please.

Only Time Here are some actresses who have aged so gracefully and remain beautiful through the years. Set to 'Only Time' by Enya. I believe only a few of them have had cosmetic surgery. Includes Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, the Redgrave sisters, Tyne Daly, Shirley MacLaine, Candice Bergen, Katharine Hepburn, Joanne Wooward, Glenn Close, Mariette Hartley, Mary Tyler Moore, Julie Andrews, Susan Sarandon, Barbara Babcock, Cloris Leachman, and Goldie Hawn.
