Nancy Kulp-Buddy Ebsen Feud - 1984 Nancy Kulp and Buddy Ebsen starred together for nine seasons on The Beverly Hillbillies, one of the most popular sitcoms in television history. From 1962 to 1971 Kulp played prim bank secretary Miss Jane Hathaway. Ebsen played the patriarch of the oil-rich, unsophisticated Clampett clan. In 1984 Kulp, a Democrat, decided to run for Congress in her home state of Pennsylvania. She attempted to unseat popular 12-year Republican incumbent Bud Shuster in the state's 9th District. During the campaign, Kulp made an offhand remark that all the surviving cast members from The Beverly Hillbillies were supporting her. Ebsen, a lifelong Republican, wanted to set the record straight: He dispatched a note to Kulp from his California home. It read, "Hey Nancy, I love you dearly, but youíre too liberal for me. Iíve got to go with Bud Shuster." The rift between the two actors was further exacerbated when Ebsen did a radio spot for Shuster in which he reiterated his objections to Kulp's liberal politics. Kulp believed Ebsen's intrusion into Pennsylvania politics was "cruel." Embittered, she terminated their friendship. On election day Shuster soundly trounced Kulp by about a 2:1 margin. Apparently Kulp and Ebsen only reconciled shortly before Kulp's death from cancer in 1991.

Frank Buckles - The Last Doughboy Frank Buckles was the last surviving American verteran of the First World War. This photo show him with President George W. Bush in 2007. He had volunteered at age 16 and drove ambulances and motorcycles in France. He died just after his 110th birthday in 2011. Because Buckles was not a combat soldier, he did not qualify for burial at Arlington National Cemetery. It took a special act of Congress for Buckles to be interred there. Buckles died a few months before Claude Choules, a British sailor living in Australia. Choules was the last accepted WWI combatant from any country.

Robert E Lee Citizenship Restored - 1975 When General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to General U.S. Grant on April 9, 1865 to effectively end the Civil War, one of the terms of surrender was that Confederate soldiers would have their U.S. citizenships automatically restored. When Andrew Johnson became president following Abraham Lincoln's assassination, he changed the rules slightly. Fourteen special cases had to apply directly to the President to have their citizenships restored. One such case was Robert E. Lee. Lee wrote to President Johnson on June 13, saying in part: "Being excluded from the provisions of amnesty & pardon contained in the proclamation of the 29th Ulto; I hereby apply for the benefits, & full restoration of all rights & privileges extended to those included in its terms. I graduated at the Mil. Academy at West Point in June 1829. Resigned from the U.S. Army April '61. Was a General in the Confederate Army, & included in the surrender of the Army of N. Va. 9 April '65." Consequently, Lee was provided with an Amnesty Oath form, which he filled out, dated October 2, 1865--the same day he was sworn in as president of Washington College in Lexington, VAĖ-and sent the signed document to the nation's capital. Lee's application was received by Secretary of State William Seward who had no intention of following through with Lee's request. Lee died in 1870 without really knowing his citizenship status. A century passed. In 1970 Lee's application was found by chance by a National Archives clerk who was looking through old State Department files. Since Lee had made the proper application to restore his citizenship, there was no reason to deny it. After Congress made Lee's old application something of a special cause, President Gerald Ford formally restored Lee's citizenship at a ceremony at his former mansion in Arlington, VA on August 5, 1975. Among those on hand for the occasion was Lee's great-great-grandson R.E. Lee V.

Theodore Roosevelt - Near Fatal Carriage Accident On September 3, 1902, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and several other prominent politicians came within inches of being killed by a speeding trolley car in Pittsfield, MA. The president, riding in a horse-drawn carriage, was on his way to deliver a speech when the accident occurred. The carriage was knocked about 40 feet upon impact. Secret Service agent William Craig was fatally injured, becoming the first Secret Service agent killed in the line of duty. Roosevelt was knocked from the carriage and landed face first upon the street. He suffered superficial wounds to his face and leg. (The seriousness of Roosevelt's injuries was probably understated. Roosevelt's leg wound became infected and abscessed. He required surgery and was confined to a wheelchair for a short time. Although the leg wound healed completely, Roosevelt was bothered by the aftereffects of his injury for the rest of his life.) David J. Pratt, the driver of the carriage containing the president, was severely injured. George B. Cortelyou, Secretary to the President, was severely bruised. Winthrop Murray Crane, Governor of Massachusetts, and George P. Lawrence, Representative in Congress from the First Massachusetts district, escaped with only a few bruises. All were in the carriage with Mr. Roosevelt. A newspaper account said, "Under the sunniest of September skies the distinguished party was driving through the Berkshire Hills in a landau drawn by four white horses, the reins handled by Pratt, the President and his companions going from Dalton to Lenox. The carriage was struck squarely just behind the box on which Pratt and Craig were sitting. The vehicle was hurled 40 feet across the road. Craig was instantly killed and ground under the heavy machinery of the car into an unrecognizable mass. The President was thrown into the air and landed on the right side of his face in the roadway. Mr. Cortelyou was thrown out and almost rendered unconscious. Gov. Crane, who, next to Craig, was the nearest to the immediate danger line, was thrown out, but...escaped with only slight bruises." No one on the trolley was injured. According to reports, the trolley was speeding in an attempt to get to its destination ahead of Roosevelt's carriage. Euclid Madden was the trolley car's motorman. He received a six-month prison term for his role in the accident. James Kelley was the trolley car's conductor. In 2002, on the hundredth anniversary of the accident, the Secret Service held a special ceremony at agent Craig's grave where a marker was placed.
