Babs64 wanted to know what Donna Douglas (Elly Mae Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies) was up to today. Well, brace yourself, Babs, here she is! This unflattering photo of her was taken at a 2007 parade in Tennessee where she was the grand marshal. Donna Douglas is 74 years old. Twice divorced, she lives in Baton Rouge and keeps herself occupied by working for various Christian children's charities. She also makes many public appearances dressed as Elly Mae Clampett. (Geez, I hope that's a wig she's wearing.)

Since we're on a bit of a Beverly Hillbillies kick, here's a picture of Irene Ryan (Granny Clampett) from her heyday. She looked older than she really was. She died in 1973--two years after the show was cancelled. She was only 70 years old!

This is the last couple of minutes from my favorite episode of The Beverly Hillbillies (The Indians Are Coming). It's political incorrectness at its best! Granny learns that a native tribe has a territorial dispute with the Clampett land claim back in Tennessee. She expects the worst and assumes the 'Injuns' will soon be attacking. In order to prevent the Clampetts from going back to Tennessee to fight the Injuns, Mr. Drysdale arranges for some Hollywood stuntmen to simulate an Injun attack on the Clampett home in Beverly Hills! Throughout the episode Granny wishes John Wayne were present to help fight the Injuns. He shows up at the very end in a brief cameo appearance.

From 1962, Granny Clampett (Irene Ryan) and Pearl Bodine (Bea Benaderet) promote Winston cigarettes in their Beverly Hillbillies roles. Benaderet died of lung cancer in 1968.

Nancy Kulp and Buddy Ebsen starred together for nine seasons on The Beverly Hillbillies, one of the most popular sitcoms in television history. From 1962 to 1971 Kulp played prim bank secretary Miss Jane Hathaway. Ebsen played the patriarch of the oil-rich, unsophisticated Clampett clan. In 1984 Kulp, a Democrat, decided to run for Congress in her home state of Pennsylvania. She attempted to unseat popular 12-year Republican incumbent Bud Shuster in the state's 9th District. During the campaign, Kulp made an offhand remark that all the surviving cast members from The Beverly Hillbillies were supporting her. Ebsen, a lifelong Republican, wanted to set the record straight: He dispatched a note to Kulp from his California home. It read, "Hey Nancy, I love you dearly, but you’re too liberal for me. I’ve got to go with Bud Shuster." The rift between the two actors was further exacerbated when Ebsen did a radio spot for Shuster in which he reiterated his objections to Kulp's liberal politics. Kulp believed Ebsen's intrusion into Pennsylvania politics was "cruel." Embittered, she terminated their friendship. On election day Shuster soundly trounced Kulp by about a 2:1 margin. Apparently Kulp and Ebsen only reconciled shortly before Kulp's death from cancer in 1991.
