Laurence Owen US Figure Skating Champion 1961 Earlier I posted the Sports Illustrated cover photo of 16-year-old Laurence Owen. Here she is winning the 1961 U.S. championship in Colorado Springs on January 25, 1961--three weeks before she (and the rest of the U.S. team) were killed in a plane crash in Belgium. This was the first time the U.S. Figure Skating Championships were broadcast on network television. (Miss Owen's first name is misspelled on the TV graphic.) Yes, that is the familiar voice of Dick Button providing the commentary--back in 1961!

George and Tammy We Loved It Away I wasn't always a country music fan, but after 43 years with a country boy, it was bound to grow on me.

Donovan Sunshine Superman The groups first collaboration was "Sunshine Superman". One of the first overtly psychedelic pop records, it was an innovative and eclectic blend of folk, rock, pop and jazz. The arrangement was augmented by prominent harpsichord and sitar, and set against a funky conga-driven backbeat. It also contained subtle but unmistakable references to LSD — notably, the line, "I could've tripped out easy, but I've changed my ways". The US version of the Sunshine Superman LP is arguably the best, most consistent and most durable of Donovan's albums, and it remains one of the keynote records of the psychedelic era. 1966

Halifax Explosion On December 6th of 1917, the worst pre atom bomb explosion in history occured in Halifax NS. Two ships, the Imo, and munitions ship the Mont Blanc collided in the Halifax harbor, and within 10 minutes, the Mont Blanc was ablaze, and the explosion took place about 25 minutes after that, at approx. 9:05 AM. The top picture was taken about 15 to 20 seconds after the blast from 21 kilometers away, The bottom picture is 2 days following the devastation, with the Imo shipwrecked in the harbor about mid picture. It is estimated about 2000 lives were lost, and without the help of train dispatcher Vince Coleman, who lost his life in the blast, more would have died as a passenger train from here in Saint John was expected to arrive in Halifax momentarily. Mr. Coleman sent a warning via Morse Code stating, "Stop trains. Munitions ship on fire. Approaching Pier 6. Goodbye",and would not stop until he recieved a message back from the train. Mr. Coleman saved about 300 lives, but lost his own due to his heroism.

The Fridge William Perry Former Chicago Bears defensive lineman William “The Refrigerator” Perry remains hospitalized in South Carolina. Aiken Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Melissa Summer said Wednesday that Perry is in serious condition. The 46-year-old Perry has been hospitalized to deal with complications from Guillain-Barre (gee-LAN’ bah-RAY’) Syndrome, a chronic inflammation disorder of the peripheral nerves. Perry’s nephew, Purnell Perry, said Tuesday that his uncle was admitted more than a week ago but was expected to recover. A man who answered the phone Wednesday at Purnell Perry’s home in Aiken said he couldn’t comment on the football player’s hospitalization. The 300-pound plus defensive tackle played for the Bears’ 1985 Super Bowl team, and helped lead Clemson to the 1981 national championship.
