Deacon Jones on The Brady Bunch Deacon Jones died on June 3, 2013 at the age of 74. Jones was undoubtedly one of the greatest defensive players in the history of the National Football League. Had accurate totals of sacks been counted in Jones' era, many fans believe he might still hold the all-time NFL record nearly 40 years after he retired. (One source credits Jones 26 unofficial sacks in the 14-game 1967 season---which would be a single-season NFL record. Sacks weren't officially recorded in the NFL until 1982.) Despite his football prowess, my first memory of Jones comes from this 1971 episode of The Brady Bunch in which he played himself. The plot revolves around Peter being teased by his macho football teammates because he sings with a glee club.

Ron Howard Happy Days TV Guide Cover 1974 Happy Days began its 10-year run on ABC on January 15, 1974 as a mid-season replacement show. Its nostalgic look at 1950s America was well received by people of all ages. This TV Guide cover from June 1974 shows Ron Howard and actress Kathy O'Dare. Despite what the caption says, O'Dare was not a regular on the series. In fact, she was only in two episodes that aired more than a year apart in which she played two different characters. However, O'Dare was in the very first episode, titled 'All The Way.' The plot has Potsie arranging a date for Richie with classmate Mary Lou Mulligan, a vapid, shapely lass who has 'a reputation.' It turns out that Mary Lou's alleged reputation is based on mere gossip and she really is 'a nice girl.' O'Dare also appeared on an episode of The Brady Bunch in 1974 as the apple of Peter Brady's eye. O'Dare later reunited with Howard when they co-starred in a forgettable 1976 southern-style car-chase film titled Eat My Dust. O'Dare died at the young age of 52 in 2010.

Susan Olsen - Sindy Doll Commercial A few years after The Brady Bunch was cancelled, Susan Olsen, who had played the youngest Brady daughter Cindy, was hired by Marx toys to be the spokesperson for their new Sindy doll. (I'm assuming the different spelling of 'Sindy' was done to avoid legal entanglements with Paramount Pictures who created The Brady Bunch.) The commercial is shown twice here--the second time without sound.

Don Drysdale Warns Greg Brady About Pro Baseball Some lessons from old TV sitcoms are timeless. Some aren't. In this clip from a 1970 episode of the Brady Bunch (titled The Dropout), recently retired superstar pitcher Don Drysdale warns Greg Brady that being a pro ballplayer isn't all it's cracked up to be. Considering what the average MLB player earned back then, he had a point. Today however...

Big John Little John - Sitcom Flop Who recalls this sitcom dud? In the fall of 1976, NBC decided to move away from cartoons and create a sitcom for its Saturday morning audience. It was titled Big John, Little John. The show's premise was that 40-year-old middle school teacher John Martin, while vacationing in Florida, takes a small sip of water from a hidden pool--not realizing it is the fabled Fountain of Youth that Ponce de Leon once hoped to find. The effect was that 40-year-old John would unpredictably descend in age to a 12-year-old...and then return to being an adult again just as unpredictably. (According to the story, had John taken a large drink from the pool, he would have been 12 years old forever!) Herb Edelman played 40-year-old John. Robbie Rist (notorious for his role as Cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch) played 12-year-old John. Joyce Bulifant played 'their' wife. Only 13 episodes were made. The last first-run episode aired just before Christmas 1976, but reruns were shown until September 1977. Here is the show's opening.
