Brady Bunch - Final Episode The final first-run episode of The Brady Bunch aired 40 years ago today: Friday, March 8, 1974. It was the 116th installment of the show. Robert Reed (who played father Mike Brady) thought the script was so bad he refused to appear in the episode. Here's the plot: The two youngest Brady kids come up with separate ideas to make a fortune. Bobby acquires a case of hair tonic from a mail-order company and tries to sell the stuff door-to-door at $2 a bottle. Cindy intends to breed rabbits. Bobby has no luck as a salesman. Oldest brother Greg--who is about to graduate from high school--takes pity on Bobby and buys a bottle of the tonic. When he uses it, however, his hair turns a ghastly shade of bright orange! Five shampoos only serve to make Greg's hair even more hideous. Eventually a dye job at Carol Brady's favorite beauty parlor restores Greg's hair to its normal shade of black just in time for his big night where he graduates with honors. (Mike is noticeably absent when the family returns home from the ceremony. He is said to be out of town on business.) Meanwhile, Cindy's rabbit-breeding efforts are in vain because she discovers she has only male rabbits. When Bobby tries to pour his unsold tonic down a drain, he accidentally spills some of it on Cindy's rabbits. Bobby and Cindy agree to make the best of the situation by selling orange rabbits. By the 1973-74 season, The Brady Bunch was in severe decline. The kids were all over 12 years old and the show's original premise of two families merging into one was long gone. In an attempt to appeal to a younger demographic, Robbie Rist was brought in as Cousin Oliver for the final six shows. It didn't work. NBC's Sanford and Son was clobbering The Brady Bunch in the ratings so ABC pulled the plug. The last rerun aired on ABC on August 30, 1974. Still, the remarkable cult following of The Brady Bunch was strong enough to garner three failed reincarnations: The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, The Brady Brides, and The Bradys. A 1988 Brady-based made-for-TV Christmas movie drew enormous ratings.

Risque Partridge Family Scenes A few years ago I posted a clip from The Brady Bunch that was seemingly okay when it aired in November 1972, but it has since been deleted from syndicated prints. (The scene involved Bobby and Cindy on their way to their new neighbors' skinny dipping pool party! Alice stops them, thankfully!) Similarly, here are assorted scenes from the fortieth episode of The Partridge Family, titled Home Is Where The Heart Was. It first aired on January 7, 1972. The plot centers around the two youngest Partridge kids deciding to run away from home after being scolded. The first 3-1/2 minutes are benign, but there's absolutely no way a TV network today would approve of the scenes in the following minute. Wow! Nudity and minors looking at porn on The Partridge Family! I must have missed this episode when I was a kid--or maybe it didn't mean anything to me at the time.

Kodiak - Failed TV Drama Here's an ABC promotional clip for Kodiak, a new 30-minute 1974 police show set in Alaska. Kodiak starred Clint Walker as Cal (Kodiak) McKay of the Alaska State Patrol. Walker had seldom been seen on television since his days on the western Cheyenne, which ended in 1963. Kodiak was doomed as ABC slotted it against NBC's megahit Sanford and Son. Poor ratings caused its cancellation after just four weeks. Here's a tidbit of trivia: Kodiak was the show that replaced The Brady Bunch in ABC's 8 p.m. time slot on Fridays.

Funny Boston Bruins Promo This short promo is probably the best of the bunch produced by the Boston Bruins in 2008. It gives clear guidance that Bruins fans should not date Montreal fans.

Child Actress Dawn Lyn Anyone remember her? This is Dawn Lyn, who played Dodie late on the long run of My Three Sons from 1969 to 1972. Dodie was the daughter of Steve Douglas' new wife Barbara. Dodie was generally not well received by fans of the show, who often compare her to the much-hated Cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch. Dawn is the sister of Leif Garrett. (She also played Prudence in the pilot episode of Nanny and the Professor. By the time the pilot was picked up by ABC, her contract had expired and she was already a member of the MTS cast.) She currently resides in Germany with her husband.

Susan Olsen - Then and Now Here are two photos of Susan Olsen (who played Cindy on The Brady Bunch from 1969 through 1974). The photo on the left was probably taken in about 1970 or 1971. The photo on the right is recent.

Anissa Jones Anissa Jones was the first of a long line of child stars from the television era whose life spiralled downward after her acting career had ended. Jones first acted in a cereal commercial at age six in 1964. At age eight, in 1966, Jones was cast as Elizabeth (Buffy) Patterson-Davis in the sitcom Family Affair. Part of Buffy's persona were the amusing conversations she had with her doll, Mrs. Beasley. Mrs. Beasley dolls became popular toys. (Jones' tightly curled pigtails inspired Cindy Brady's similar hairdo on The Brady Bunch.) Family Affair went off the air in 1971 when Jones was 13. Jones commented she was glad the series ended so she no longer had to carry the doll. Although Jones was offered a teenage role in The Brian Keith Show, she turned it down to unsuccessfully seek movie roles. (In contrast, Jones' Family Affair co-star Johnny Whitaker worked regularly on television and in Disney movies for many years.) Jones enrolled in high school but dropped out before graduating. Her parents' nasty divorce cause a rift in her family. At one point Jones was working in a donut shop. When she turned 18 she was able to access her $180,000 in Family Affair earnings from a trust fund. Later that same year, on August 28, 1976, Jones died of a drug overdose at a house party. The coroner claimed it was one of the most severe overdoses he had ever encountered. Jones' brother also died of an overdose in 1984.
