Sugar Ray Leonard One of my all-time favorite boxers, Sugar Ray Leonard, is featured on the cover of a 1979 issue of The Ring magazine. The late 1970s and early 1980s saw a renaissance in the sweet science. Leonard's skill and popularity were major reasons.

Danny Lopez SI Cover 1979 One of my favorite boxers, exciting world featherweight champion Danny (Little Red) Lopez, was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated on February 12, 1979--29 years ago today. In today's repressive, politically correct society, there's no way SI would run that photo and use that caption. It generated no complaints in 1979, though.

Jack Dempsey Challenges Robots Former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey assures his legions of fans that he can whip any boxing robot that science can create! The Manassa Mauler says, 'I wouldn't be afraid of any robot or mechanical man. I could tear it to pieces, bolt by bolt, and scatter its brain wheels and cogs all over the canvas.' (You can't make this stuff up, folks!)

Parachutist Disrupts Heavyweight Title Fight I thought I'd seen every weird occurrence at a sports event until I saw this. During a 1993 bout between Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe for the world havyweight title at an outdoor venue in Las Vegas, a parachutist attempted to descend into the ring in the seventh round. His chute snagged and he became entangled in the ropes. Reports say Bowe's entourage gave the intruder a pretty good pummeling before security staff intervened.

Bobby Brady Washing Machine Mishap Bobby Brady learns the hard way it's a bad idea to dump a whole box of laundry detergent into the washing machine. It's from a 1973 Brady Bunch episode titled 'Law and Disorder.'

Documents and Other Evidence from JFK Assassination Plot Revealed Today Brass knuckles and a pistol holster that were in Jack Ruby's possession at the time of his arrest after he murdered Lee Harvey Oswald were presented along with other historical documents and memorabilia connected to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy during a press conference in Dallas today. Long-hidden items and documents related to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy were revealed for the first time after spending nearly two decades locked inside a courthouse safe. Dallas County DA Craig Watkins presented the articles at a Presidents' Day news conference while standing next to brown and white file boxes stacked in a pyramid. The items include a purported transcript between Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald and Oswald's killer, nightclub owner Jack Ruby; a leather gun holster that held the weapon Ruby used to shoot Oswald; brass knuckles found on Ruby when he was arrested; and a movie contract signed by then-Dallas District Attorney Henry Wade. Watkins said investigators told him about the contents of the blue, two-door safe shortly after he took office in 2007. 'And every DA up until the new administration decided that they wanted to keep it secret,' he said. But he decided 'this information was too important to keep secret.' One of the most intriguing items was the typed transcript of an alleged conversation between Oswald and Ruby. The transcript - which hasn't been examined by experts and has already been called farfetched by some - includes talk of killing the president at the behest of the Mafia.

Jack Johnson Vs James Jeffries The most socially significant boxing match ever contested pitted world heavyweight champion Jack Johnson against former champ James Jeffries. Jeffries, who had hung up his gloves in 1904, had been coaxed out of retirement by big money to take on the cocky black champion in Reno, Nevada on July 4, 1910. The fight proved to be no contest as Johnson won easily. Race riots erupted all over the United States when the result was announced.

Dempsey Tunney Long Count It is one of boxing's most talked about incidents. In 1926, boxing master Gene Tunney outpointed slugger Jack Dempsey in Philadelphia to win the world heavyweight crown. Their rematch a year later in Chicago produced the famous 'long count.' Watch as Dempsey floors Tunney but forgets to go to a neutral corner as required by the new rule. Tunney takes a nine count but stays on the canvas for 14 seconds because of Dempsey's gaffe.

Sugar Ray Robinson Perfect Punch Boxing historians generally rate Sugar Ray Robinson's spectacular knockout of middleweight kingpin Gene Fullmer in 1957 as "the perfect punch." Judge for yourself. (The video is out of synch with the commentary.)

Duane Bobick Great White Hope Flop Anyone else remember heavyweight boxer Duane Bobick? He was a bronze medallist at the 1972 Munich Olympics. He won his first 38 pro fights and was thought to be the next Great White Hope. Then Bobick faced Ken Norton in Madison Square Garden on May 11, 1977 in a bout televised by NBC. With 42 million people watching, disaster...
