For anyone who hasn't seen this film, Jaws is a 1975 thriller directed by Steven Spielberg, based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel inspired by the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916. Jaws bears similarities to several literary and artistic works, most notably Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. The character of Quint strongly resembles Captain Ahab, the obsessed captain of the Pequod who devotes his life to hunting a sperm whale. Quint's monologue reveals his similar vendetta against sharks, and even his boat, the Orca, is named after the only natural enemy of sharks. A direct reference to these similarities may be found in the original screenplay, which introduced Quint by showing him watching the film version of Moby-Dick. His laughter throughout made people get up and leave the theater (Wesley Strick's screenplay for Cape Fear featured a similar scene). However, the scene from Moby-Dick could not be licensed from Gregory Peck, the owner of the rights. The final scenes of the film, in which the men chase the shark and try to harpoon it with flotation barrels, parallel the chase for Moby-Dick in the novel. We have this in our library and watch it usually once a month. There's something about this film that sticks in my memory, and no, I never went back into the water.

It was the wildest play in the history of college football. (Okay, it was the wildest play in the history of sports!) On November 20, 1982, on the final play of the Cal-Stanford game, the Golden Bears improvise their way to a touchdown through the Stanford defense--and the school's marching band!

Once we were proud nation.. there was nothing we couldn't do, or accomplish.
There was noting that we couldn't manufacture for ourselves. This was the American Spirit. It was what made this country the envy of every nation in the world.
Now, as one TV commentator put it, "We have become suicidally arrogant ... we have the attitude that there isn't anything anyone won't sell us."
It has been argued that "America holds no resemblance to the once great nation for which our forebears fought and died. Given the rapidity with which America has forsaken its heritage, can you imagine what it will look like 50 years from now?" - Chuck Baldwin
Once can only wonder. But, Once Upon A Time In America, it was truly a great and promising place to be.

George Blanda, the ageless Hall of Fame quarterback and kicker with the Oakland Raiders, has died. He was 83.
The Raiders confirmed the death Monday and issued a statement saying "we are deeply saddened by the passing of the great George Blanda. George was a brave Raider and a close personal friend of Raiders owner Al Davis."
Blanda retired a month shy of his 49th birthday before the 1976 season, playing longer than anyone else in pro football history. He spent 10 seasons with the Chicago Bears, part of one with the Baltimore Colts, seven with the Houston Oilers and his final nine with the Raiders.
He scored 2,002 points in his career, a pro football record at the time of his retirement, kicking 335 field goals and 943 extra points, running for nine touchdowns and throwing for 236 more.

There is a Canadian town (located in northern Ontario) that bears the odd name of Swastika. Founded in 1904, it began as a mining community. No one is quite sure about the origin of the town's name. When Naziism was on the rise in the 1930s, the government of Ontario forced the 600 people of Swastika to accept Winston as a new name for the town. The people rebelled, tore down the Winston sign on the highway, and replaced it with another Swistika sign that carried the message: 'To hell with Hitler. We had the name first.'
