The original classic Sunday night version of What's My Line ended its run of more than 17 years and 876 shows on September 3, 1967. Everyone figured the final mystery guest would be a biggie. Some newspapers even speculated it would be President Lyndon Johnson. (Hence, Arlene Francis' question about being 'voted into office.') Instead host John Daly was himself the mystery guest! Quite a fitting conclusion, I'd say!

This is the introduction of the What's My Line panelists for June 26, 1960. It was the night after a freak accident, originating from Arlene Francis' Manhattan home, in which an unfortunate passerby was killed. Arlene lived in an eighth-floor apartment at the Ritz Tower at the corner of Park Avenue and 57th Street. Eight-pound weightlifting dumbbells were used to prop open a screen window of the apartment where an air conditioning unit had been removed. On the night before this show aired, while Arlene was in Connecticut peforming in a play, a maid accidentally knocked a dumbbell out the window. It struck a luckless pedestrian on the street below and killed him! The victim, Alvin M. Rodecker, a financier from Detroit, was visiting New York City with his wife to celebrate his 60th birthday. (Rodecker's wife noted the last thing her husband said was what a wonderful time he was having.) In 1962 Francis paid Rodecker's estate $175,000 in an out-of-court settlement. The Ritz Tower paid $10,000. John Daly congratulates Arlene on appearing so soon on WML after the awful incident.

'Everyone's Gone To The Moon' is a song that was written and recorded as the debut single of the British singer-songwriter, producer and impresario Jonathan King. The song, which was released in 1965 while King was still an undergraduate at Cambridge University, immediately shot him to international fame.
It was a top-ten hit in the UK and also reached #17 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It went on to sell more than 4.5 million copies world-wide and so established King in the music industry. It has since been performed by hundreds of other artists, including Marlene Dietrich, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra and Percy Faith. Source: Wikipedia

Beautiful Ava Gardner makes her first ever television appearance as a mystery challenger on What's My Line on September 13, 1953. (Watch for Arlene Francis' potentially embarassing question about Ava's marriage. Ava was married to Frank Sinatra at the time. Their wedlock was volatile.)

New York Giants' halfback Frank Gifford appears as a regular contestant on the December 2, 1956 episode of What's My Line. Earlier that day Gifford had figured in all four the the Giants' touchdowns in the team's 28-14 victory over the Washington Redskins. Gifford was named the NFL's MVP in 1956. Panelists Dorothy Kilgallen and Arlene Francis are clearly smitten by the handsome 26-year-old gridiron star.
