Oct 20- McArthur I Shall Return On Oct. 20, 1944, during World War II, Gen. Douglas MacArthur stepped ashore at Leyte in the Philippines, 2 1/2 years after he'd said, "I shall return." This is obviously after he said that.

French Girlfriends of German Soldiers When France was liberated in 1944, members of the French partisans and underground exacted their revenge on local women who'd had German soldiers as lovers. The women would publicly have their heads shaved as a mark of shame and betrayal.

Thom McKee on Tic Tac Dough The first big game show superstar (after the scandals of the 1950s) was Thom McKee. In 1980 McKee won $312,800 on Tic Tac Dough. He won 43 games and tied 44 before being defeated in his 88th game. Here is McKee, early in his winning streak, picking up $36,000.

Seattle Pilots The Seattle Pilots were an American League baseball club that lasted just one season--1969. This is the official team logo. The Pilots began play the same year as the Kansas City Royals, the San Diego Padres, and the Montreal Expos. The Pilots' owners were granted a team because they assured Major League Baseball a domed stadium would be built in Seattle within two years. That didn't happen. Instead they played at an antiquated minor league park called Sick's Stadium. The venue was so shoddy that seats were still being renovated on Opening Day. Visiting teams hated playing in Seattle because the ballpark's plumbing was horribly inadequate, forcing them to shower at their hotel. The stadium's toilets often failed when more than 10,000 people came to games. (That seldom happened; the Pilots drew just 677,944 fans for their 74 home dates. Still, the Pilots outdrew four other MLB clubs in 1969.) The team alienated potential supporters by having no local TV deal and charging as much as (gasp!) $6 per ticket--the highest price in MLB at the time. After finishing in last place in the American League West with a 64-98 record, and incurring losses of about $250,000, the team uprooted and moved to Milwaukee in 1970 and became the Brewers. Oddly enough, there is more interest in the Pilots now than when they were around. Mainly it is because of pitcher Jim Bouton's irreverent book, Ball Four.

The Big Noise Poster If you've never seen the 1944 Laurel and Hardy film The Big Noise...good for you! Critics unanimously panned this painfully unfunny wartime comedy about a huge explosive device that bumbling janitors Stan and Ollie find. One critic wrote, 'Laurel and Hardy try to deliver a bomb--and they do.'

Gordie Howe on Whats My Line Marty will enjoy this clip! Gordie Howe, one of hockey's all-time greats, is a mystery challenger on the syndicated version of What's My Line. This would have been from late 1972, I imagine, when Gordie came out of retirement at age 44 to play with his two sons for the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association. Howe played until age 52.

Hartford Circus Fire 1944 On July 6, 1944, 168 people perished in a big-top fire in Hartford, CT while attending a performance of the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus. The circus tent had been treated with a combination of paraffin and gasoline for waterproofing, causing the tent to burn rapidly. The cause of the fire is unknown. Careless smoking is considered the most likely cause, though some people suspect arson. Many of those who died were trampled by the fleeing crowd. Others simply refused to leave the burning tent until they had located their friends and family. Circuses were banned in Connecticut for many years afterward. Among the 6,700 people who survived the blaze were famed clown Emmett Kelly, future Connecticut lieutenant governor Eunice Groark, and 13-year-old spectator Charles Nelson Reilly.
