Bill Clinton Dies Onstage (Booed) In 1988, then-governor of Arkansas William Jefferson Clinton made his national debut at the Democratic Convention when he endorsed Michael Dukakis for the nomination. Unfortunately, it was a very long speech that got cheers when he finally ended.

Tragic Child Actress Judith Barsi Judith Barsi was a prolific child actress who appeared in at least 72 commercials and a handful of movies and TV shows before her horrifying death at age 10 in 1988. Barsi was spotted by a talent scout at a skating rink when she was nearly six years old. He mistook her for a three-year-old. Extremely tiny for her age, she was able to play much younger roles. At age 10 she was only 3'8" tall. Excellent at understanding precisely what directors wanted from her, Barsi appeared in commercials advertising McDonald's restaurants, peanut butter, orange juice, potato chips, soup, and dolls. It is estimated that she was earning close to $100,000 a year from her acting gigs. Fans of the sitcom Cheers will recall Barsi playing the role of a new bartender's adorable little daughter in a 1986 episode titled Relief Bartender (see photo). One of Barsi's last projects was providing the voice of Ducky in the 1988 animated film The Land Before Time. Barsi's home life was a nightmare: Her father, Jozsef, had fled communist Hungary. He was a violent alcoholic who mentally and physically abused Judith and her mother Maria, who was also refugee from Hungary. Judith had told fellow actors that her father had threatened to kill her on several occasions. On July 25, 1988, Barsi was shot to death by her father while she slept in the family's Los Angeles home. He also killed his wife. He stayed with the bodies for two days before burning them and turning his gun on himself. Barsi was supposed to audition for another role on the day she was murdered.

John DAmico Tribute NHL linesman John D'Amico spent the better part of 24 years officiating in nearly 1,700 games. He started his career as a referee in 1964 but quickly found being a linesman was more to his liking. This feature focuses on D'Amico's final game, a Jets-Maple Leafs game in 1988. (The narrator is a familiar voice to Canadian hockey fans: Brian McFarlane.) D'Amico died of leukemia in 2005.

Trumbull CT Wins 1989 LLWS In 1989, Trumbull, Connecticut--population 32,000--won the Little League World series in a spectacular upset, defeating the team from Kaohsiung, Taiwan 5-2 in a thrilling game. Teams from the Far East had dominated the LLWS since international play had widened in the late 1960s. Things got so bad for American teams that foreign teams were excluded from the 1975 tournament. Teams from the Far East demolished all opposition from 1984 through 1988. In 1987 a Taiwanese team crushed the American champs from Irvine, CA so badly (21-1) that a mercy rule was adopted for the 1988 tourney. Thus few people thought much of Trumbull's chances two years later. Here is a seven-minute documentary about how the 1989 upset unfolded. Chris Drury, a pitcher on the Trumbull team, eventually became an NHL hockey player.

Olympic Boxing Champ Howard Davis Passes It has been announced that Howard Davis Jr., a gold medalist on the vastly talented 1976 American Olympic boxing team, passed away at age 59 from inoperable lung cancer on December 30, 2015. In a TV news interview conducted about two weeks before his death late, Davis claimed he had never used tobacco nor alcohol throughout his entire life. Davis was one of five American gold medalists who dominated the Montreal Olympic boxing tournament. Davis won the Val Barker Award as the most outstanding boxer in those Games. This was quite a feat considering the other American gold medalists were Sugar Ray Leonard, Leo Randolph, Michael Spinks, and Leon Spinks. Davis was a sentimental favorite as his mother died from a heart attack just a week before the Olympics began. Davis won two of his five Olympic bouts in the lightweight division by knockout, but as a professional he seldom displayed punching power, recording only 14 knockouts in 43 fights. Davis' lack of a big punch and generally cautious approach to his bouts made him far less marketable to TV audiences than Ray Leonard or Michael Spinks. Nevertheless, three times Davis fought for pro world titles and three times he lost. His last title fight loss--a first-round defeat to Buddy McGirt in 1988--sent Davis into retirement. Six years later Davis won three comeback fights before suffering a bad knockout defeat as a middleweight which ended his boxing career. His overall pro record was 36-6-1. The other four American Olympic champs from 1976--plus heavyweight bronze medalist John Tate--won at least some version of a world title at the professional level.
