Steffi Graf SI Cover 1989 Fraulein Forehand, the great Steffi Graf, was the cover subject of this issue of Sports Illustrated from 1989. Armed with a powerful inside-out forehand and a classic slice backhand, Graf dominated tennis for a little while--capturing a rare grand slam in 1988. Despite SI deeming Graf to be invincible, Monica Seles was on the rise and would soon rival the formidable German for supremacy in women's tennis.

Wonder Years TV Guide Cover This is the Winnie we all remember! Here is Danica McKellar with Fred Savage on a 1988 cover of TV Guide. The Wonder Years was one of the finest TV shows of the 1980s, in my opinion.

Lawn Darts Remember Lawn Darts? Also known as Jarts or yard darts, they were a popular game at picnics and in backyards during the 1970s and into the 1980s. A typical set consisted of four to eight darts comprised of two different colors along with two plastic rings. The rings were placed a reasonable distance apart and served as targets for the darts. Rules varied from place to place, but the game was scored in a similar fashion to bocce or horseshoe-pitching. A game could be played as a one-on-one singles match or with partners. The metal tips were designed to dig into the lawn when they landed. Of course, they could also dig into somebody's flesh if the darts were thrown recklessly. In December 1988 the sale of the metal-tipped lawn darts was banned in the United States. Canada banned them the following year. Since then, safer forms of 'lawn darts' have proved to be very unpopular with consumers. Quality sets of the metal-tipped lawn darts are prized by collectors.

1948 Easter Present As seen in the March 1948 issue of Seventeen magazine. A dress ad employing product placement (Pepsi), and showing an Easter bunny that looks a little like Chucky from the 1988 film Child's Play. LOL

Olympian Anthony Hembrick Misses Bus During the mid-1980s, Detroit's Anthony Hembrick, a member of the U.S. Army, was a three-time American amateur middleweight boxing champion. He was perceived to be a medal hopeful when he arrived at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. However, Hembrick never got the chance to show his stuff because he never got the opportunity to fight there. Hembrick and his coach, Ken Adams, were misinformed about the time of Hembrick's first-round match and missed catching a bus from the Olympic Village that would have gotten him to the boxing venue in ample time. By the time Hembrick and Adams arrived at Chamshil Students' Gymnasium, Hembrick had been disqualified and the match was awarded to South Korean Ha Jong-Ho. The 1988 Olympic boxing tournament was replete with odd incidents and controversies. Anti-American sentiment among the host South Koreans was widespread. Some conspiracy-minded people believe Hembrick was deliberately misled about the time of his match so the South Korean boxer would win by walkover. Hembrick later embarked on a pro boxing career, usually at light heavyweight, that was largely disappointing. He was often introduced before his bouts as "the man who missed the bus."

122-Year-Old Jeanne Calment - Oldest Person Ever Jeanne Louise Calment (21 February 1875 4 August 1997) was a French woman who had the longest confirmed human lifespan in history: 122 years and 164 days. She resided in Arles, France for her entire life. Calment outlived both her daughter and grandson. She entered the Guinness Book of Records in 1988 as the world's oldest living person. On October 17, 1995 she became the oldest person ever, having surpassed the highly disputed case of Shigechiyo Izumi of Japan. Calment became the last living documented person to have been born in the 1870s when the Japanese super-centenarian Tane Ikai (born 1879) died on July 12, 1995, and was thence more than five years older than any other living human being until her death more than two years later. She outlived no fewer than 329 undisputedly verified super-centenarians. (A super-centenarian is a person who has attained 110 years.) Calment's lifespan has been thoroughly documented by scientific study, with more records having been produced to verify her age than for any other case. She is the only person confirmed to have reached 120 years of age. Calment came to prominence at age 113 in 1988 during a local observance of the hundredth anniversary of artist Vincent van Gogh's 1888 visit to Arles. The 13-year-old Calment had briefly met Van Gogh at her uncle's store where the Dutch painter had gone to buy art supplies. Calment unflatteringly remembered the famed artist as being ugly, unfriendly and rude! The photo below shows Calment celebrating her 121st birthday in 1996.
