Censored Shirley Temple Film Curly Top (1935) was one of Shirley Temple's first feature films for 20th Century Fox. In it Shirley played a lovable, spunky orphan. The film is best known for Shirley's famous 'Animal Crackers' song. Movie scholars also remember Curly Top as the film that featured a controversial Temple hula dance that ended up on the cutting room floor. What did seven-year-old Shirley do to ire the censors? She wore a grass hula skirt but no top! The public didn't see little Shirley's bare torso until the late 1970s when the clip was included in the syndicated TV program 'That's Hollywood!' The hula scene is not included in DVDs or videotapes.

Little Lulu A Memory of the 30s Old enough to remember Little Lulu? The comic strip first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post on February 23, 1935 in a single panel comic strip, and ran until Dec 30, 1944. Lulu appeared in a series of theatrical animated shorts from 43-48. Her voice was done by Mae Questal, who also did Betty Boop and Olive Oyl. In the late 50's the cartoon was syndicated to tv. The Little Lulu anime is extremely rare and has been out of print in the US for years, although some full-length English-language episodes recently turned up on YouTube, and were said to have all been removed....

Sticks Nix Hick Pix The famous headline that appeared on the front page of Variety on July 17, 1935. (The translation from showbiz lingo to English is that rural audiences were rejecting movies about country bumpkins.)

1935 Pittsburgh Crawfords The 1935 Pittsburgh Crawfords, champions of the Negro National League, are considered one of the greatest baseball teams ever assembled. Five Hall-of-Famers played on that club: Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Judy Johnson, Cool Papa Bell, and Oscar Charleston. Nodody can say for certain how the Crawfords would have fared against major league teams, but it's safe to assume they were better than the Pittsburgh Pirates that year. The Pirates were a fourth-place club in 1935.

Lucille Ball in Roberta This is a shot from the 1935 black and white movie starring Irene Dunne as a deposed White Russian princess who has become a famed Parisian couturier. Dunne is the partner of "Roberta" (Helen Westley), who passes away, leaving her half of the business to American football player Randolph Scott—who of course knows next to nothing about the gown business, and couldn't care less anyway. Keep an eye out for a blond Lucille Ball as a fashion model. . .
