1933 Adolf Hitler Baby Photo Hoax In 1933, this supposed baby picture of Adolf Hitler circulated in newspapers in England and the United States. When it appeared in the Chicago Tribune in October 1933, the German consulate in that city denounced the photo as a hoax and provided a real baby photo of Hitler (which I posted on this website a little while ago). The hoax photo came from the London Bureau of Acme Newsphotos and originated from an unknown source in Austria. In 1938, Mrs. Harriet Downs of Lakewood, Ohio saw the photo in a magazine and recognized it as a doctored version of a photo of her two-year-old son, John May Warren, taken in 1932! The photo had been deliberately altered to make the child look sinister. How a baby photo from Ohio ended up in the hands of a hoaxer in Austria has never been discovered. Tragically, the boy in this photo died a few months later, at the age of eight, in a bicycle mishap.

Oh Happy Day John Wayne married Josephine Saenz, daughter of the Panamanian Consul in Los Angeles on June 23, 1933. After the ceremony, the couple and guests celebrated at the home of Loretta Young (right). Wayne divorced Josephine in 1945 after he met the woman who would become his second wife, Esperanza Baur. Their rocky marriage lasted until 1953 when Wayne met Pilar Pallete, the daughter of a Peruvian Senator. Pallete was married to Wayne until his death in 1979 from lung cancer. . .

Call Her Savage 1932 Clara Gordon Bow was born in Brooklyn, New York (1905). Her early life was marred by poverty, mental illness (her mother was schizophrenic) and violence. Her mother slit Clara's throat in a rage over her decision to pursue a film career. During the early 1920s, Clara won a magazine beauty contest which led to a successful screen test. Her film career spanned eleven years from 1922 to 1933. During that time, Bow made 56 films. In 1928, she was the highest paid screen actor making $35,000 per week. With her nasal tone and heavy Brooklyn accent, her career began to decline with the advent of sound. Bow's career was damaged further by several highly publicized lawsuits for alienation of affection. She was also plagued by mental health problems that lead to repeated institutionalization throughout the remainder of her life. She died of a heart attack at age 60 in West Hollywood. . .

Wheezer - Our Gang Robert Hutchins joined the Our Gang troupe in 1928 as a three year old. (He acquired the nickname 'Wheezer' on his first day on the set when he ran around so much he began to wheeze.) Hutchins appeared in 58 Our Gang shorts through 1933 where he usually played a tag-along little brother. His acting career was controlled by a father so domineering he wouldn't allow the other cast members to play with his son during breaks in shooting. He planned to be a pilot, but Hutchins died in 1945 at age 20 in an airplane crash during his last week of flight school.

Our Gang - Dorothy DeBorba Dorothy DeBorba was a regular in the early talking period of the Our Gang comedies. Recognizable by her Mary Pickford-type curls and hair ribbons, DeBorba was sometimes referred to as 'Echo' because she liked to repeat other characters' comments--or at least try. Years later DeBorba opined that the boys in the troupe always got the best lines. Yet she uttered some of the funniest lines in the long history of the Our Gang comedies. DeBorba's famous dialogue occurs in 'Love Business' when she tries to repeat the romantic lines lovesick Chubby was practising. Chubby: 'Oh, my darling, can you hear the pleas in my whispers?' Dorothy: 'Darling, I can hear the fleas in your whiskers.' Chubby: 'If love is like a rose, I will pick my rose in a bud.' Dorothy: 'If love is like a rose, I will stick my nose in the mud.' Chubby: 'My heart is filled with joy. I want to trip and dance.' Dorothy: 'My heart is filled with joy. I want to rip my pants.' DeBorba appeared in 24 Our Gang comedies from 1930 to 1933. She died from emphysema at age 85 on June 2, 2010.
