I Just Want To Make Music - Ken Tobias This is Ken Tobias. I posted a video last summer that Ken wrote, "Stay Awhile" by The Bells. This song is a hit he had here in Canada, released in February of 1973. I actually got Ken's blessing to post this video this afternoon. He's a cool cat. :-) Ken's photo is by Dan Culberson

Who Put The Bomp by Barry Mann A One Hit Wonder is usually classified as an artist or group who only had one song reach the charts in their careers. Sometimes tho, you find something interesting when researching them. ;-) (Only the predominant songs on the album covers apply here).

The Doors Of Education This is a pro education short about some Florida Universities. Who would have known that years later, this man would be known as The Lizard King. And this was before he needed a haircut too! ;-)

Granny Loves Her Winstons I'm sorry, because I loved this show, and partly because I'm a smoker, but having Granny pimping cigarettes so passionately just seems wrong. Listen to how enthusiastic she and Pearl are when they talk about the quality of those deadly coffin nails....oops, I mean the smooth tasting satisfaction of Winston Cigarettes. ;-)

Stay Awhile The Bells Hi all. Sorry I had to take a break from the site as my daughter was going through some turmoil and needed my attention. I hope all is well friends. I have to share an experience that was way beyond cool for me. I have recently been granted access to a local music studio that my nephewís rock band rents space in and I have been writing songs and practicing guitar up there for a couple of weeks now. Last Thursday night, I went to the studio, and was let in by my friend Tim. He was sitting with a friend, and I set off to the smoking room before I went to work. Tim and his friend come up, and we start talking. After about 10 minutes, I realize that Iíve seen Timís friend before, but couldnít place him. Then he made a comment about when he plays a certain song in concert, some people are really surprised to hear that he wrote it. The song is this one here, Stay Awhile, and the manís name is Ken Tobias. I couldnít believe it. This man had a string of Canadian hits in the mid 70s, and wrote this song that The Bells made famous. He is originally from here, but after a few years in Toronto and LA, he made the decision to come back home to live. He hung out with us all night, and was as cool as could be. A surreal moment came when sitting in Timís office, I looked across at Ken sitting on a couch and saw right above his head, a framed and signed album cover from him featuring his portrait from 1976. It was a night that I will remember for a long time. He is still very active in the local music scene here, and still performs occasionally. If we cross paths again, I must get a pic taken with him. I will post a Ken Tobias video later on, but I always loved this song. Very pretty melody. Thanks for letting me share a cool memory for me friends.

Name The Child This young lady is better known for her acting skills, but she started out as a little diva on Kids Incorporated along with Stacy Ferguson AKA Fergie in the early 90s. Can you name her?

Halifax Explosion On December 6th of 1917, the worst pre atom bomb explosion in history occured in Halifax NS. Two ships, the Imo, and munitions ship the Mont Blanc collided in the Halifax harbor, and within 10 minutes, the Mont Blanc was ablaze, and the explosion took place about 25 minutes after that, at approx. 9:05 AM. The top picture was taken about 15 to 20 seconds after the blast from 21 kilometers away, The bottom picture is 2 days following the devastation, with the Imo shipwrecked in the harbor about mid picture. It is estimated about 2000 lives were lost, and without the help of train dispatcher Vince Coleman, who lost his life in the blast, more would have died as a passenger train from here in Saint John was expected to arrive in Halifax momentarily. Mr. Coleman sent a warning via Morse Code stating, "Stop trains. Munitions ship on fire. Approaching Pier 6. Goodbye",and would not stop until he recieved a message back from the train. Mr. Coleman saved about 300 lives, but lost his own due to his heroism.

Ummm...The Price Is Wrong If it is true what I have heard, that the armed forces are known for paying extraordinary prices for everyday items, then this guy must be a company man all the way. The woman sure loved his bid tho.

Peggy Sue Wow, I'm only in my 40s, but it seems hard to believe Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper have been gone for over 50 years now! This is an appearance The Crickets made on Arthur Murray Dance Party in 1957. Some American Bandstand compilations include this video, despite the fact that it wasn't actually performed on the show. According to Dick Clark, Buddy Holly and the Crickets only appeared once on AB, in the fall of 1958, playing the song Heartbeat, and that the footage of that single event was destroyed sometime in the 1970s. Sad news indeed. That AB episode was Buddys last TV performance before the tragedy.

The Tweel 8 track tapes, vinyl records, analog TV, Windows OS 3.1, 95, or 98, and a host of other items have come and gone in the past, and your car tires could go this way eventually. Michelin is experimenting with The Tweel, an airless tire that could make the inner tube a thing of the past. The pros are that having a flat tire would become a thing of the past, when the tread is worn, it can be replaced, as opposed to discarding whole tires, lessening the environmental impact by reducing the rubber discarded, and the polyurethane spokes can be designed to handle differing road conditions, but it isn't ready for market yet. Driving over 50 mph can result in undesirable vibrations, also the sound is loud to the ears when driven at high speeds. When these new airless tires eventually hit the market, there might be another valuable item though that goes the way of the dinosaur. Apparently spike strips are useless against them. I can't see law enforcement officers being overly enthusiastic about this new technology!
