Doc Ellis This is a photo of former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Doc Ellis, who died of a liver ailment at age 63 on December 19, 2008. His heyday was the early 1970s. Ellis is most famous for throwing a no-hitter versus the San Diego Padres on June 12, 1970 when he was tripping on LSD.

I remember the time he made a move towards a batted ball and he choked on tobacco juice. Imagine the discomfort from that one!
