Here is some action from the third set of the 1974 men's U.S. Open final. Jimmy Connors, who had just turned 22, demolished Australia's Ken Rosewall, who was nearing his 40th birthday. It was the most lopsided final ever: The score was 6-1, 6-0, 6-1. Connors had also beaten Rosewall in the 1974 Wimbledon final in straight sets.

I'd be willing to bet that no 39-year-old will ever again reach the final of the U.S. Open.
Jimmy Connors was 39 in 1991 when he got to the semifinals.
