McLean Stevenson Quits MASH In what may have been the worst career move in television history, McLean Stevenson left the cast of MASH in 1975 and signed a long term-contract with NBC. MASH lasted until 1983 and is listed among the all-time great series. Stevenson was given roles in five different NBC series, none of which lasted more than a season and a half. Stevenson rued his decision until his death in 1996.

Shelley Long leaving Cheers is in the same league of McLean Stevenson leaving MASH.

Imagine being in something huge and not knowing it.

Henry was actually as popular as Hawkeye.

I wasn't sure if radar announcing his death during theatre was wise.

I'd never thought of that, Wikiriwhi. A group of surgeons are trying to save their wounded patients' lives--and they are distracted by the news of a friend. Yeah, why didn't Radar announce Henry's death after the OR session had ended?

Stevenson actually died in 1996 as the result of complications from surgery for bladder cancer.

Thanks for pointing out the error, Tenorissimo. The year of McLean Stevenson's death has been corrected.

Stevenson died of cardiac arrest while recuperating from bladder cancer surgery.
