East German Steroid Swimmers At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, American Shirley Babashoff was supposed to be the female version of Mark Spitz. Babashoff was a threat to win six gold medals. Instead, she won just one gold medal and four silvers. In every race she lost, she lost to an East German. The star of the East German women's swimming team was Kornelia Ender (pictured here). Babashoff was immediately suspicious of the East Germans because of their muscular builds and deep voices. She claimed the dressing room 'sounded like a coed room.' At the time, Babashoff was criticized as a sore loser. The press dubbed her 'Surly Shirley.' After East Germany collapsed in 1989 the truth came out: East German athletes were regularly given steroids via injections to increase their athletic capabilities. Babashoff now campaigns to have the East German medal results nullified.

There's no statute of limitations on catching cheaters. In stands to reason if the IOC wants to retroactively strip medals from drug cheats at the 2000 Olympics, why not go back a few more years and strip the East German swimmers, runners, cross-country skiers too?

There were so many times in my life when I would have given anything to have those muscles!

The East German swimmers themselves claim they were unaware that the injections they were getting contained steroids. They were told they were vitamins.

To me it doesn't matter. That's still cheating.

Better atheltes through chemistry. I believe that Sports Illustrated did an article of some of the female East German athletes and that some of them underwent sex change operations as a result of taking steroids. What goes around comes around.

A few years ago a Toronto newspaper published a letter from a weightlifting fan who listed about a dozen champion weightlifters from Bulgaria and Turkey who had died before the age of 35. Undoubtedly steroids were a factor in their premature deaths.

I'm betting that Barry Bonds doesn't live to be 55.

There is poetic justice sometimes.
