Audie Murphy Life Cover Here is the very definition of an American hero: Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier of the Second World War. He was under age and undersized, but his battlefield exploits are almost beyond belief. Murphy was awarded 33 American military medals (including the Congressional Medal of Honor), five French military medals and one Belgian military medal. He was killed in a private plane accident in 1971. According to some sources, his grave at Arlington National Cemetery is the second-most visited, second only to John F. Kennedy's.

There's a film that we watch whenever it's on, based on his life. It's titled 'To Hell and Back'. It starts with his boyhood in Texas, where he became the head of his family at a young age, and follows his enrollment in the US Army where he was assigned to the 3rd Division. He fought in North Africa, Sicily and Italy before landing in southern France and eventually fighting in Germany.

More reasons to admire this man: Audie Murphy was actually embarrassed about how famous he was. In his autobiography (To Hell And Back) Murphy focuses far more on the bravery of his comrades than his own exploits. He never once mentions the dozens of medals he won.

When Universal Studios expressed interest in turning To Hell And Back into a film, Murphy originally suggested that Tony Curtis--not himself--play the lead.

To Hell And Back was an enormous success, grossing more than $10 million at the box office--a fantastic sum in the 1950s. It was Universal's highest-grossing film in its history until Jaws was released in 1975.

Unbelieveable the Marines turned him down. probably not a subject they dwell on.

he was phycologically damaged after the war and slept with a gun.

can you imagine the number of young men who fought and died by his side.
Definitely love to see the movie again.
