I wasn't a fan of his but when he said he wouldn't seek re-election that proved his conviction to me.

LBJ should've dumped him.

My Grandmother always said he helped get John Kennedy killed. I know there is a lot of stuff all around especially from his mistress.
But he did do a lot of the things Kennedy didn't. Like the great society, medicare, food stamps. Of course that is where our Social Security went, when he moved it to the general fund and used its surplus to fund Viet Nam and such.
He wanted a legacy and got a sour grape.
Still remember the students chanting outside the White House. Hay Hay LBJ how many did you kill today. He had the casuality reports delivered every morning when they came in.

These two men so mismanaged that war; they have many mens blood on their hands. This was a graphic example of civilian meddling in military matters leading to the loss of many more American lives then there should have been.
Politicians; especially liberals, just can't seem to wage war the right way. Give the generals a mission and then leave them alone.
The quickest way to end a war is to destroy the enemies will to fight quickly. It winds up saving lives in the end.
But Johnson and especially McNamara were running individual missions from Washington; and this was in an era when communication was slow and inefficient.
Had Goldwater won; far fewer Americans would have died and the war would have been a lot shorter. And South VietNam would probably be a prosperous country today.
