Did Mallory Conquer Everest First Thirty-seven-year-old British mountaineer George Mallory may have reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1924--29 years before Sir Edmund Hillary achieved the feat. In June 1924, Mallory and Andrew Irvine attempted to reach Everest's summit via the North Col route. The twosome were last spotted a few hundred metres from the summit by geologist Noel Odell. They were not seen alive again. Mallory's well preserved frozen body was not found until 1999. (Irvine's body has yet to be found.) Did Mallory die trying to reach the summit or did he reach it and perish on the descent? Nobody knows for certain. His camera has not been found. However, Mallory intended to leave a photo of his wife at Everest's summit if he got there. The photo was not found on Mallory's body.

George Mallory was supposedly the first mountaineer to answer the eternal question of 'Why climb Mount Everest?' with the pithy reply, 'Because it is there.'

I saw on a doco that they found his body with a debt he owed to a london business in his pocket

sure he was forgiven belatedly.

though I hope he wasn't a cause of that businesses demise. Bet it aint there today.

I'm guessing he was close to reaching the summit, but just didn't make it. I'm pretty sure he would have left his wife's picture there as he intended. Not sure how he would have secured that picture there and still made it's location noticeable to whoever came along next to discover it, but I'm sure he had a plan for that. Ultimately, I don't think he made it that far. There's really no evidence that he did.
