The first automat in the U.S. was opened 1902 in Philadelphia. The automat was brought to New York City in 1912 and gradually became part of popular culture in northern industrial cities.

I remember going to Horn and Hardarts automat in New York City when I was a kid. I loved putting the money in the little slots and opening the door to take out a sandwich or a piece of pie. Fun!

Dear Ginny,
I remember going with my
mother to The Horn Hardart
Automats in NYC back in the
1960's.
I enjoy the food..especially
the dishes that you can get from
the windows for a few cents.
The last time that I went to
the last HH Automat in June,
1988.
That was when WPIX TV Ch.11
in NYC was celebraiting it's 40th
anniversary.
The food was great..the soft
drinks good and screens were
showing clips from WPIX TV's
best shows..kinnies and tapes.
There was also dancing too.
Sadly..The Automats are long
gone.
But?
The memories of those places
still remain.
Mr.Nostalgia.

The automats are returning probably as a novelty to lure customers. There is one in NYC and if you Google automat and dig, you can find others throughout the world including the UK!http://www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/144489
