Famous Ski Jump Crash The name Vinko Bogataj probably doesn't mean much to you, but I bet you've seen him. Bogataj was the hapless Yugoslavian skier whose spectacular wipeout at a ski flying event in Oberstdorf, West Germany in 1970 was shown on the opening and closing montages on ABC's Wide World Of Sports for years. Ouch! The agony of defeat!

My high school phys. ed. teacher gave our class an assignment to identify famous sports figures from a list of names. Good old Venko Bogataj was on that list. I've always remembered his name since then.

It was many years before Vinko was even aware of his celebrity for his failed jump. He was stunned when he was invited to attend the 30th anniversary celebration for Wide World of Sports in '91, and speechless when Muhammad Ali came up to him and asked for his autograph! He really had no idea that the brief moment he spent tumbling off his course would make him a celebrity.

This would be minor today with YouTube and all the other internet sites let along national news!
