Over-the-Counter Heroin You can't make this stuff up! From 1898 to 1910 you could legally buy heroin over the counter from your local druggist. It was marketed as a non-addictive morphine substitute and a cough medicine for children!

Nineteenth century newspapers in Canada were known to run drug store ads promoting opium--which was totally legal then too.

I suppose if you took that stuff you'd quickly forget about your cough!

It wasn't really that long ago when you could get medicinal products containing opium over the counter. I still remember the early 50's, my mom, who wouldn't harm a fly, used to give me something called Paregoric, it was a liquid and she used it when we had stomach pains. I didn't know until a few years ago that it contained opium!! No wonder I was always such a happy child LOL
