Garo Yepremian Super Bowl Blunder Super Bowl VII in January 1973 pitted the invincible Miami Dolphins against the Washington Redskins. Miami went into the game undefeated--and came out that way too. However, the game was closer than it should have been thanks to the unforgettable and comical blunder made by Miami placekicker Garo Yepremian. As this clips shows, Yepremian's field goal attempt was blocked. He then picked up the ball and tried to make a pass (albeit an illegal one). As you can plainly see, the Cypriot-born kicker had no clue what he was doing. Yepremian died recently at the age of 70.

I've always been puzzled as to why this bizarre play was ruled a fumble recovery for a touchdown for a touchdown rather than an interception return for a touchdown.

When he picked the ball up it was a live fumble, he could have ran for the first down. His arm was still going back when the ball came loose again so it was another fumble.

It was the only points Washington scored.

Yep. Garo's goof deprived Miami of the only shutout in Super Bowl history.

Apparently Garo Yepremian was a wonderful member of his community, working tirelessly for charitable causes. He died of brain cancer earlier this month.

For all his successes as a player he is more remembered today for his one blunder in the Super Bowl. But I bet he had a good laugh over the years about it.

What a moment in sports!
