Before cable and pay per view you had to go to the theater and watch it on closed circuit to see big fights like that or listen to it on the radio.

Attending a big fight at a closed-circuit venue was an experience. Because one was surrounded by excited and usually knowledgeable fellow boxing fans, it was almost like being present at the fight. I probably went to a dozen in the 1980s. My fight was Leonard-Hearns in 1981 (a great fight!). The last was Mike Tyson-Michael Spinks in 1988 (a stinker).

So true, Marty.

Most people today don't know (or care) who the world heavyweight champion is. Compare that indifferent attitude to when the world was transfixed by the Ali-Frazier fight in 1971.
