It was during the Sixties that the notion of WEARING a national flag was challenged. Up until then, and even THEN, this notion was considered very controversial and even disrespectful. This prompted people to begin to engage in conversations about what the meaning of a national flag was and where should the line be drawn in a flag's use in popular culture. This was also the period of time when burning the American flag in public displays of civil disobedience connected to the Viet Nam war was causing riots in the streets.

I remember Raquel Welch wearing an outfit like those in the pic above. It was highly controversial but only among right wingers.

To me, it is perfectly patriotic and artistic. And cool looking, too!

I must be one of those right wingers who objects to any country's flag being used for certain garments of clothing.

I have no objections to flag-themed jackets, shirts or caps, but I draw the line at flag-themed shorts. It's as if the wearer is sitting on the flag. It bothers me.

Classico, I don't mean to sound nationalistic but I think we have one of the greatest looking flags in the whole wide world.
But I know what you mean Lava1964, I have similar reservations even tho I don't want to.
