Olympic Lacrosse Lacrosse was an official medal sport in two Summer Olympics: 1904 and 1908. Canada won both 'tournaments' (if you can call them that). In 1904 at St. Louis there were only three teams competing. Two of them were Canadian. In 1908, the tourney in London consisted of one game between Canada and Great Britain. It was played more than three months after the other Olympic events had concluded! This photograph is from that game, won by Canada 14-10.

Notice they were playing without sissy face shields or helmets. Men were men back then...

Great action foto. I understand that much of the action in lax from those days were ground balls. This possibly accounts for why there weren't many injuries to the face or head back then.

Lax was popular in a number of northern colleges and, of course, on reservations. Therefore, I wonder why there were no other teams in the those Olympics.

The modern Olympic movement was still in its infancy in 1904 and 1908. At the 1904 games in St. Louis, more than 90 percent of the entrants were Americans! When I was in university, I wrote a term paper for a course on Edwardian England. In that paper I argued that the 1908 London Olympics were the first truly modern Olympics. Nevertheless, there weren't many team sports on the program. Those team sports that were contested had a decidedly British flavor, with teams representing Scotland, Wales, England, and Ireland. Therefore a lacrosse game between Canada and Great Britain probably was big deal at the time.

I know nothing about Lacrosse other than there is a ball and all the people run around.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell, Jed.

One other important point: Goals are scored by putting the mischievous little rubber ball into the opponents' net.
