Clara Bow montage Clara Bow, the It Girl, was the biggest silent movie starlet in the world in 1927 and 1928. (I believe she still holds the world record for most fan mail received by anyone in a month.) She was a natural beauty whose perkiness jumped off the screen. Her career petered out when talkies came in. Many people wrongly assume her voice didn't suit talkies well. Actually her voice wasn't unpleasant at all. However, she was uncomfortable with the new medium of talking films and just slowly faded into obscurity. I think this montage is captivating.

This was the first time I've ever really watched her perform, as so many of the usual clips are grainy, but this is perfect! She was a beauty wasn't she? I've heard that with the invention of talkies, many stars faded into oblivion. Like Clara, many of them didn't have the voice. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Most people don't even recognize the names of silent movie stars anymore. I read a biography of Clara and was appalled by the numerous nasty (and totally unsubstantiated) rumors that surrounded about her personal life. I think she was happy to fade into obscurity.

I was fortunate in that I was raised in a home where my mother and grandmother were big time movie fans, I knew every actress and actor in the american cinema by the time I was 10!

This montage reminds me of the Norma Desmond line in Sunset Boulevard: We didn't need dialogue; we had faces.

That one line was so true.

My favorite moment in this montage occurs at about 0:50 when Clara tries to suppress a smile. I think she's charming!
