Henry Cooper Decks Cassius Clay The most critical moment in the boxing career of Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali) occurred in this June 18, 1963 fight at London's Wembley stadium versus lightly regarded British champion Henry Cooper. A Clay victory would pretty much assure him of a title fight versus Sonny Liston. But wait! Watch Clay get decked by a Cooper left hook at the end of round four. Round five was delayed slightly when a tear in one of Clay's gloves was brought to the attention of referee Tommy Little. Some people believe the extra few seconds between rounds--and it was only a slight delay despite the persistent myth that claims round five was delayed anywhere from three to ten minutes--allowed the dazed Clay precious extra time to recover his senses.

Therer were about 60,000 fans at this fight. The overwhelming majority wanted to see their countryman, Cooper, knock out the arrogant American. Yet when Clay/Ali was champion, he got vast amounts of fan mail from Great Britain.

I'll be impressed if anyone can answer this boxing trivia question based on this fight.

Besides Henery Cooper, who were the three other pro fighters who knocked down Clay/Ali?

Joe Frazier
Larry Holmes
Those are the only two I think.

Eric is half right: Joe Frazier was one of the other three boxers who managed to deck Clay/Ali, but Larry Holmes wasn't one of them. Frazier and Cooper are probably the most famous (both coming on spectacualr left hooks). The other two are more obscure. Here's a hint: One occurred during an Ali title defense in the 1970s.

Chuck Wepner?

Very good, Eric! Chuck Wepner is credited with a knockdown of Ali in his 1975 title challenge in Cleveland. (Replays, though, clearly show the knockdown was a result of their feet becoming entangled.)

So far Chuck Wepner, Joe Frazier, and Henry Cooper have been identified as three of the four fighters who decked CLay/Ali. One more to go--and it occurred early in Clay's career.

I never gave the answer to the trivia question I posed her more than four years ago. The four boxers who decked Clay/Ali in pro bouts were Sonny Banks, Henry Cooper, Joe Frazier and Chuck Wepner.
