Hockey Night in Canada titles from a 1981 Stanley Cup match comes the titles n' classic theme tune for CBC's HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA. Generations of hockey fans were instantly invigorated by the opening notes of the theme, up until CBC opted not to pay the requested royalties and go for an entirely new piece of music. Rival network CTV subsequently snapped up the rights to the original theme.

Never had the opportunity to watch hockey on Canadian TV but I'm sure this inspires many fond memories for some folks. Heck, I have never been on a pair of ice skates in my life and I never will at this stage of my life.

This, and the theme music from ABC's Wide World of Sports, are the two greatest sports themes ever, in my opinion.

This was the HNIC theme starting in 1968. Nobody even remembers the pre-1968 HNIC music.

It was written by a British woman who retained the ownership of the piece. She later had a falling out with CBC when the network sold the theme as a ringtone without her permission. That's why she sold it to a rival network.

This piece of music really is part of the culture of Canada. If you ever want to determine if someone's nationality is truly Canadian, just play this music. If the person can't recognize it, he/she's not a Canadian.
