Johnny Owen Boxing Tragedy 1980 This is a 10-minute segment of an excellent British documentary about the tragic death of Welsh boxer Johnny Owen. Owen was the British, Commonwealth, and European bantamweight champion. He was tragically killed in the ring in his attempt to win the world championship from Lupe Pintor in 1980.

This is a terrific documentary. It concludes 22 years later with Pintor flying to Wales, meeting with Owen's parents, and attending a ceremony where a statue of Owen is unveiled.

I was a huge boxing fan in the early 1980s when this great tragedy occurred. Owen was one of the gamest fighters you'll ever see.

Even after the first knock-down he should have been given a standing eight-count because of the way he looked. Also, the ref, and maybe he did, should have consulted the ringside doctor to see if the fighter was able to continue after subsequent knock-downs. I know the public wants their money's worth and blood but that is why there is a ref and ringside doctor.

Owen was properly given a mandatory eight count after both the knockdown in the ninth round and the first knockdown in the twelfth round. Referee Marty Denkin stopped the fight immediately after the second knckdown in the twelfth when it was clear that Owen was old cold.

There are no standing eight counts in most pro boxing jurisdictions. It's basically an amateur rule.
