Charlie Chaplin Grave Robbery On Christmas Day 1977, Charlie Chaplin died at the age of 88 at his estate in Vevey, Switzerland. He was buried in a local cemetery. Sixty-eight days later, on March 3, 1978, Chaplin's coffin was disinterred by grave robbers. Shortly thereafter Chaplin's family began receiving calls from a man demanding $600,000 for the return of Chaplin's remains. Mrs. Chaplin had no intention of paying any ransom, but she kept in contact with the criminals so the police could hunt them down. Eventually they were nabbed 11 weeks after the crime. The culprits had reburied Chaplin's coffin in a corn field. Chaplin's coffin was reinterred in its original burial place--under six feet of concrete to deter further grave-robbing attempts. The criminals, recent refugees from eastern Europe, were convicted of 'disturbing the peace of the dead.'

Some people on this planet, whether 30 years ago or a world away, have no conscience or morals. The depth to which they would sink to achieve their aims has no limit.

You are absolutely correct, Jed. There's always a new low to which a criminal can sink.

Did you know at one time grave-robbing was not a crime? People would routinely go into cemeteries and disinter the corpses! This gruesome act was mostly carried out by people who would sell the bodies to medical schools. Only in the last two centuries have laws been established to protect the dignity of the deceased.

I have seen programs and films about the grave-robbing in England and, I think, New England for the very reason that you stated. Although the person is no longer using the body it is still the property of the family. However, you make a valid point when you mention the new low that a criminal will sink to achieve their established goal. Disregarding respect, law, or any other obstacle. Recently in this area, we had a cemetery desecration targeting headstones and personal memorials. Simple mischief or determined criminality. They (assuming) haven't been caught.

The two lowest crimes I can remember happening in my hometown were...

A five-year-old girl had her toy purse snatched. It contained 10 cents. She told the police, 'Me got mugged.'

A crook tried to swindle the blind proprietor of our hospital's charity coffee shop by telling him he was paying with a higher denomination bill than he really was.

Pathetic, huh?

Agree, pathetic! I don't understand the criminal mind, period. Talk about moral turpitude. And, not to abandon the rule of law totally, someone should beat each perpetrator within an inch of their miserable life. Oh, by-the-way, I have jury duty later this month.
