Fonzie Jumps the Shark 'Jumping the shark' is a term in the TV industry that describes when a show starts to go downhill. The term comes from this 1979 episode of Happy Days in which Fonzie...jumps a shark! The plot revolves around the cast heading west because Fonzie has been given a chance to take a Hollywood screen test. While in California, Fonzie develops a rivalry with a rich water skiing champion. The climax comes when the two challenge each other to jump a penned-up shark. The rich dude chickens out. Here's Fonzie's famous attempt.

'Jumping the shark' is one of the great terms coined in the TV industry. It says it all in three words. After this episode, the plots on Happy Days seemed to get less and less believable. The show drifted away from its nostalgic roots. It ceased to be a representation of the 1950s and 1960s.

This episode was a ''big deal'' when it first aired in the late 70s.

I remember that episode and I couldn't believe how lame it was.

Well, ABC made a big deal out of it but one of my favorite shows was on its way out and we all knew it.

Steve, even though it got pretty sappy, it was still a show that captured a ratings bonanza.

I really noticed the decline in the end with the episodes.

There used to be a very entertaining website called jumptheshark.com. It was a place that listed hundreds of TV shows and solicited fans' opinions on when each jumped the shark. It was a really website to visit while it lasted. It was always good for a few laughs.
