Shortly after Bobby Fischer's famous victory over Boris Spassky to win the world chess championship in 1972, the 29-year-old Fischer--who was widely regarded as a Cold War hero in the western world--appeared on a Bob Hope special in this terrific skit. (Listen to the long ovation he gets when he first appears!) Fischer showed unexpected but wonderful humor, comedic timing, and an endearing personality. Sadly, those personal traits wouldn't last long in Fischer's real life.

The Big Sky Ranch was where the classic NBC series Little House on the Prairie was shot during it nine-year run (1974 to 1983). The wooden buildings no longer exist. (One of the conditions for LHOP to use the venue stated that the buildings used in the show had to be dismantled once the series ended.) Here's what the ranch looks like today--along with what it looked like when the show was in production.

Here are the first five minutes of a Hockey Night in Canada broadcast from Toronto from February 7, 1970. The Oakland Seals are the visitors who face Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens. The classic HNIC theme is heard. Two Molson beer commercials are shown. There's opening commentary by host Ward Cornell. P.A. announcer Paul Harris instructs the crowd to rise for the national anthem. An instrumental version of O Canada is played. Play-by-play man Bill Hewitt sets the scene...and the puck is dropped.

Despite Chuck Barris and NBC constantly clashing over the content of The Gong Show, the network was desperate for any prime-time hit in the late 1970s. Therefore, in early 1978, the zany Barris was permitted to create and host The Chuck Barris Rah-Rah Show--an hour-long variety program that featured guest appearances by celebrities and encore performances by some of the more memorable oddball acts from The Gong Show. Few people saw it as it was scheduled on Tuesdays from 8 to 9 p.m--directly against the two most popular TV shows in America at the time: Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley. It was cancelled in April after eight episodes had aired. Noel Holsten, the Orlando Sentinel-Star's TV critic, wrote, "[Barris] reeled around the stage as though he'd been gobbling hallucinogenic mushrooms and looking somewhat like a subterranean fungus." Barris accepted Holsten's bad review with cheerfulness: He read it during an episode of The Gong Show. (The Gong Show was booted off NBC in June.) Here's a brief promo for the February 28 premiere episode of the Rah-Rah Show.

The first (and best) host of Jeopardy!--Art Fleming--appears as a mystery guest on the syndicated version of What's My Line in February 1973. Jeopardy! was still a noontime staple on NBC when this show aired.

The Gong Show's two-year daytime run on NBC ended in June 1978. In its final week, a few memorable acts were brought back as non-competitive performers just for their entertainment value. One was the silly and creative Dr. Flame-O.

This short clip shows all five goals from Game #4 of the 1972 Stanley Cup finals on May 7, 1972. That Sunday afternoon, the Boston Bruins defeated the New York Rangers 3-2 at Madison Square Garden. (More accurately, Bobby Orr defeated the New York Rangers 3-2.) The win gave Boston a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. The Rangers won Game #5 in Boston on May 9, but the Bruins won Game #6 3-0 on May 11 to win their second Stanley Cup in three seasons. They did not win another until 2011.

Several years ago I made a post regarding the annual "Chicago All-Star Game"--an NFL preseason contest that pitted the reigning champions versus a team of top collegiate all-stars. Played from 1934 to 1976, it was held annually at Chicago's Soldier Field. The gate receipts benefited various charities. Here's a 10-minute clip from the clash between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the College All-Stars in July 1976. Frank Gifford and Bud Wilkinson are calling the game for ABC. One of the most severe rainstorms you'll ever see at a sports event--combined with out-of-control fans invading the field--caused the game to be terminated late in the third quarter with Pittsburgh comfortably ahead 24-0. With NFL teams becoming less and less willing to risk their promising rookies for the sake of an exhibition game, the 1976 game was the last of the series. It was also the last game that Ara Parseghian ever coached. The former Notre Dame coach had retired after the 1974 season, but he was coaxed out of retirement to coach the College All-Stars in this game.

At the 1972 Emmy Awards in Los Angeles Peter Falk won an Emmy for his sensational work on Columbo. Officially, the Emmy was for 'Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Series.' Here is his very amusing acceptance speech, in which he sort of sounds like Lt. Columbo when the detective is flustered.
