World Series baseball when men were men: It's Game #4 of the 1972 World Series. Cincinnati's Hal McRae is forced out at second base, but he makes sure A's infielder Dick Green won't turn a double play. Yes, McRae's maneuver was completely legal at the time.

You might not know his name but you should recall Burt Mustin's face. For years he appeared in movies and TV series as a lovable elderly gentleman. He appeared on The Andy Griffith Show, Leave It To Beaver, Batman, Get Smart, and perhaps most famously on four episodes of All in the Family. (Mustin played Mr. Quigley, a gent who "escaped" from the boredom of the seniors' home where Edith Bunker volunteered.) As this clip shows, as a 90-year-old in 1974, he appeared on The Tonight Show where he recalled attending the 1903 World Series!

During the 1971-72 TV season, Glenn Ford was offered a series by CBS. Originally CBS preferred Ford do a sitcom, but then realized Ford was more associated with Hollywood westerns than any other genre. Thus Ford starred in the hour-long series called Cade's County. In it, Ford played Sam Cade, the sheriff of Madrid County somewhere in the American southwest. Edgar Buchanan (of Petticoat Junction fame) played senior deputy J.J. Jackson. The show's plots were a combination of police mysteries and western adventures. Cade's County ran on Sundays at 9 p.m. opposite Bonanza on NBC and ABC's Sunday Night Movie. It fared poorly in the ratings and, after 24 episodes, was not renewed for a second season. Here's the opening montage. (The theme song was composed by Henry Mancini.)

From the January 22, 1977 edition of American Bandstand, Kenny Nolan (sort of) sings his hit song I Like Dreamin'. He's obviously lip-synching it, but who cares? It's such a great, romantic song.

Thirty-six-year-old Barbara Colby's acting career was very much on the upswing in the summer of 1975 when her life was cut short for no apparent reason. She had appeared in occasional TV roles in some of the 1970s most prominent shows such as Medical Center, The FBI, Columbo, The Odd Couple, Gunsmoke, MacMillan & Wife and the Mary Tyler Moore Show. By 1975 she had earned a prominent role as the title character's boss in Phyllis (a spinoff of the Mary Tyler Moore Show). Colby's character was Julie Erskine, a proprietor of a San Francisco photography studio where Phyllis was employed. Three episodes of Phyllis had been taped when Colby and fellow acting colleague James Kiernan were gunned down in a seemingly random act of violence on July 24, 1975. Both had just left an acting class when they were fatally shot in a parking lot in Venice, CA. Colby died almost instantly. Kiernan lived long enough to give the police description of two males who had done the shooting, but he succumbed to his wounds shortly thereafter. Robbery was not a motive as nothing was taken from the two victims. The crime has never been solved.
