I've been watching sports for 50 years. I've never seen anything like this occur before: At the IIHF 2018 World Under 20 hockey championship tournament in Buffalo, NY, Swedish captain Lias Andersson petulantly flung his silver medal into the crowd! Sweden had just lost the gold-medal game to Canada by a 3-1 score. (Canada had broken a 1-1 tie by scoring with 1:40 left in the third period and then added an empty-net goal not long afterward.) Obviously, the disappointed Swede was in no mood to accept a consolation prize. The medal was returned to him a few minutes after his outburst.

On October 2, 2016, Vin Scully, the greatest baseball announcer of all time (this is not debatable), called his final game to conclude 67 stellar years as a broadcaster for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. Here's how he wrapped thing up.

Greg Maddux was one of baseball's greatest pitchers. He is undoubtedly worthy of being inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. However, when his plaque was unveiled at the 2014 induction ceremony, grammarians gasped at a flagrant error in he inscription. His plaque states Maddux had "less than 1,000 walks" in his illustrious career. Because walks is a plural noun, the plaque should have read "fewer than 1,000 walks..."

It's hard to believe that 10-year-old classical singer Jackie Evancho was merely the runner-up in America's Got Talent in 2010. Here she is at the end of that year performing in Washington, D.C. She sings O Mio Babbino Caro and Pie Jesu magnificently.

On November 15, 2014 the Toronto Maple Leafs were hosting the Nashville Predators at the Air Canada Centre. Whenever an American-based team plays in Toronto, both the US and Canadian anthems are performed. This night, the singer's microphone malfunctioned halfway through the Star-Spangled Banner. No problem! The crowd finished the anthem for her!
