Our Gang - Mary Kornman Pretty Mary Kornman was the first notable female star of the Our Gang comedies. When Hal Roach announced in 1922 his intention to produce a series of films starring ordinary kids, six-year-old Mary was suggested by her parents. (Mary's father was one of Roach's photographers.) The cute blonde replaced Peggy Cartwright as the most noteworthy female cast member. She appeared in more than 40 Our Gang shorts in the silent era, often as the heartthrob for smitten boys. This photo was taken in 1924 when Mary was nine. She was dropped from the troupe before her eleventh birthday in 1926 when she was judged to be too old--and was replaced as the lead female by Jean Darling. Mary's younger sister, Mildred, had several non-speaking roles in Our Gang movies from 1926 through 1935. Mary kept acting until 1940. One role had Mary playing the female lead opposite John Wayne in one of his early low-budget westerns. She returned to do two Our Gang shorts in the sound era. Mary appeared as herself, along with a few other Our Gang 'old-timers,' in Reunion in Rhythm (1937). She also played the role of the school teacher in 'Fish Hooky' (1933), which is considered one of the best Our Gang films. Mary died of cancer in 1973 at the age of 57.

Our Gang - Peggy Cartwright Canadian-born Peggy Cartwright was the first of the Our Gang leading ladies. As a 10-year-old she appeared in five Our Gang shorts when the series began in 1922. She was replaced by Mary Kornman (who is often wrongly called the first Our Gang leading female) shortly thereafter. Cartwright married William Walker, the black actor best known for his role as a minister in To Kill a Mockingbird. Cartwright died in 2001 at age 88. She was the last of the original 1922 Our Gang kids.

Actor James MacArthur aka Dano from Hawaii Five-0 dies Actor James MacArthur, who played "Danno" in the original version of television's "Hawaii Five-0" and was the son of actress Helen Hayes and playwright Charles MacArthur, died Thursday at age 72. MacArthur's agent, Richard Lewis, said the actor died in Florida of "natural causes," but no direct cause was specified. In a career that spanned more than four decades, MacArthur was most recognized for his role as Detective Danny "Danno" Williams on "Hawaii Five-0," which aired from 1968 to 1980. Episodes often ended with detective Steve McGarret, the lead character, uttering what became a pop culture catch phrase: "Book 'em, Danno."

Jackie Wright Jackie Wright is famous to fans of the ribald Benny Hill Show. The diminutive Jackie (all 4-foot-11-inches of him) frequently played the foil in comedy sketches in which Benny rapidly patted his bald head--enhanced with special-effects smacking sounds. Wright, an Irishman, was originally an auto worker and didn't begin acting until he was nearly 60. He was an extra in the screen adaptation of My Fair Lady. (Look for him in the scene where Eliza Doolittle sings Wouldn't It Be Loverly.) Hill thought Wright's stature and face were perfect for comedy. Wright was a regular on the Benny Hill Show for 15 years. Ill health forced him to leave the program in 1983. Wright died five years later in Belfast at age 84.

Brampton Centennial HS School Shooting - 1975 The first school shooting in Canada in 73 years occurred on Wednesday, May 28, 1975 at Centennial High School in Brampton, Ontario. Just before noon, 16-year-old Michael Slobodian walked onto the campus with two high-powered hunting rifles and at least two ammunition belts. He killed John Slinger, a 17-year-old student, and Margaret Wright, a teacher in the English and art departments. Slobodian wounded 13 others before taking his own life with one of the firearms. “It was a beautiful spring day,” recalled Lorna (Matthews) McClusky, a Grade 10 student at the time. She walked into a hallway and heard what sounded like fire crackers. Then a girl who had been grazed by a bullet encountered her and yelled, “There’s someone shooting at people out there!” She and others quickly retreated to a nearby classroom. They remained there, hidden, until police gave the all clear to leave. She still remembers hearing wounded students moaning and calling out for help. That morning, 14-year-old Pam (Read) Hand was headed to her locker across from the first-floor boys' washroom. In one of those washroom stalls, Slobodian was loading his rifles to begin his deadly shooting spree. Hand remembers stopping in the cafeteria just long enough to greet a friend and take a bite of her donut. Meanwhile, in that washroom across from room 112, Slobodian had already fatally shot Slinger. The young victim managed to stagger into the hallway, where he collapsed and died. Nineteen-year-old Michael Gibeault was also in the washroom at the time. He was shot three times in the stomach and once in the arm at close range. He was able to stumble out before collapsing. Critically wounded, he would survive. Slobodian then opened fire on another boy as he made his way into the hallway, firing randomly at students in that section of the building. He walked around the corner to an art room, where he shot Mrs. Wright and another student. A note police found in his home indicated Slobodian planned to kill Wright, science teacher Ross Bronson, and anyone who got in his way. It is unclear what the teachers had done to trigger such hostility. The school was reopened shortly afterwards and the students were urged not to dwell on the tragedy. According to a news report on the 37th anniversary of the shooting, a movement is afoot to erect a permanent memorial to the two victims killed by Slobodian.
